Vermiculite in a grow room, what do you think?
    #23340690 - 06/13/16 07:21 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

My grow room is just a grow tent and it turned out to be not water proof as it was advertised. It was leaking some water from the stitches in the floor and side walls used to get wet. So, what I did I poured two 9-L bags of vermiculite on the floor and that totally solved the problem. But, now I am thinking if that vermiculite could be a harbor for some contaminants. I would appreciate your insights on that. Thank you!!!

Vermiculite alone does not contain enough nutrients to grow bacteria or fungi. You're fine.

Tell that to the mould that grows on hard surfaces.
Anything that is moist for the majority of the time will grow mould eventually. It's just that low-nutrient media take longer to develop mould.

I would be reluctant to have anything that retains moisture anywhere that you want to remain clean.
It would take quite a while for any mould to start, though, so it should be fine if you change the vermiculite periodically.

I did something similar to this years ago with my first grow. I don't recommend it. Waste of verm IMO. Better drainage or even peri lite that you can rotate out to dry would be better.

It's quite bad for your lungs when airborne too.
