humidity too low w/ perlite
    #2333892 - 02/14/04 12:09 PM (13 years, 19 days ago)

Alright, my friend birthed 8 pf style cakes into his terrarium 3 days ago. He is using 1.5 inch layer of perlite, and enough water so you can almost see it pool up in a couple places, its is below the perlite level almost all places. But for some reason his humidity is reading about 60%. He sprays with a fine mist onto the walls with a spray bottle about 5 or 6 times everytime he fans, which has been three times a day.

Does anyone know what he can do to raise the humidity??? It is a tub in tub, because if he didn't use a heater, the temp was around 67. right now the temp is at a steady 72.

Thanks for your help!

Indead...check it. And if it's working, add 1 inch more
of wet perlite

alright, well is the best way to test it by putting it in a ziplock with a salt paste? because thats the only way I could find how to check it.

Also, it is just a cheap one, not digital, and only measures up to 90%

yes, thats the best method. There is a faq i believe of how to calibrate it more in depth. While the 90% should be enough to give you a reasonable enough idea of where you are, hopefully its not off calibration by waay to much.

if you were to put a 3" layer of perlite into the bottom the terrarium and then filled with water half way up the perlite, you would prolly see great improvement...perlite acts as a wick, and will pull the water from the lower areas into the upper areas where the water can then evap...if your perlite is almost compltely submerged then the evaporation will not be nearly as high...the more perlite that is wet(not submerged) the better.

alright, after he sees if the hygrometer is right, he will add some more perlite

also, he can't tell if his terrarium is airtight, what can he do to make it air tight?

thanks

put a piece of saran wrap over it and seal the lid on top of it.

store bought hydrometers are crap...they do not work...ones that work in the hundreds to thousands of dollars...to know that your RH is high enough you should see condensation running off the walls...toss the hydrometer, they're useless.

if you're container has a lid that locks down, or snaps down, chances are it's airtight enough. it doesn't have to be perfectly airtight.

think about all those people that run fans into their terrariums.

better still take heaps of saran wrap and twist it so you can run it right around the inside groove of the lid ,after a while it stays put from the weight of the lid
