60/40 whithout any buffering agent ?
    #2333787 - 02/14/04 10:58 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Hi shroom experts ! here is my new question : is the coco coir + verm casing tek is going to work without any lime, oyster shells etc... because I have problems to find this where I live... I got hold of some coco bricks, they indicate "coco compost" and the indicated pH is "5.8 to 6.8" so isn't that too low as in TMC is stated that the initial pH of the casing for cubies should be from 6.8 to 7.2 ? Any other way to bring the pH to a better level ? I found some block of "calcium" to feed horses can I crush them and mix with my casing ? thanks for all help Pedro

Easiest way to case: Buy Jiffy Mix. It's exactly a sphagnum moss and verm mix and it already had lime in it. Put the amount you need into a bowl, get it soupy wet, and nuke for 5 minutes. I've literally never had a problem using Jiffy Mix for casings. (And you can get Jiffy Mix at any garden store/center)

Depends on what else is in that "calcium" block...can you not find calcium supplemements or capules in your local store (I've seen calcium carbonate used that was ground-up mineral supplements from the health aisle in the market)...

if you really need a buffering agent, i'd suggest baking soda (or powder, i forget which is calcium carbonate) with a pH of 6.8 though, i don't think that you would need to use much if any at all....oh, and if you don't have any baking powder/soda...you can always use crushed egg shells, they too are calcium carbonate. not to mention, they'd prolly add a nice texture to your casing layer.

You really don't need to use a buffering agent with Coir and Verm.

Good luck

Verm and coir usually don't need to be adjusted. The adjustment is usually for mixes containing peat.
