There's a channel on directv that plays nothing but old jazz tracks from that era -- I'll turn it over to that often times when I'm at home and tripping, I'll turn it up and head to the porch for a bowl and some cigarettes...good times, good times.

You're stupid if you think jazz died in the 70s and refuse to listen to any newer jazz I can't say the genre is in its prime, but 50 years after its most interesting period, interesting works are still being made in jazz, which is fucking crazy. Real jazz too, not "suburban eunuch" bullshit

Yeah I agree. There's some real stuff out there if you search hard enough. I think some people get the impression that jazz today is nothing but the shit you hear in elevators or the generic meh stuff they'll play on AM jazz radio stations.

Don't even have to look that hard, but yeah, good jazz isn't gonna be played on the radio or in public or whatever.
For example, ECM records continues to put out straight gold consistently even now like 40-50 years into their history.

I'm not of that opinion(even though I like good elevator music) but I'm going to need some names.
Jazz for me has always been nice melodies that told a story. It has its ups and downs but you experience it.
When I think of modern jazz, I think of well studied, excellent players but just a mass of never ending nerd notes.
I've heard really good gypsy jazz players live who were astonishing but they were also playing standards(with their own take on it).
The Rosenberg trio are really good but it's not really my bag as someone above said.

There are a couple nice jazz bars in the city of the brotherly love. I forget the names though, and it's been a while since I've been to one. The last one was in old city I think (may be wrong). There was an afghani restaurant & a hookah bar on the same block. My friends know all the spots down there. I'll have to ask them about the various jazz clubs.
I've been super interested in the 20s-50s for a while now. The history, the music, the style. I really love big band swing. There's this French DJ that mixes old time big band swing with hip hop beats, and it's amazing! Match made in heaven for sure. Learning how to swing dance is a goal of mine.

That sounds like it'd be crazy dope. I'm fascinated with that time period in American culture too, almost as much as I am with the 60s-80s

I was being generous with the early 70s comment, could say late 60s

Same here. I'd rather hear the latter, melodically driven improvisation rather than theory-driven stuff that, while I'm sure it requires high skill and lengthy study, seems to my ears to go nowhere melodically.

I don't consider poetically bereft noodling to be music in general, hence why I said Jazz is dead
