It's surprising how delicate they are for moisture, especially since they are so dependant on it. I think it's because in nature, they fruit around summer time or something. Can't see how they develop healthily in nature if it's raining.

this was a weird grow man. i had windowAC unit on.  temps at steady 70.  no sign of knotting even after scratch/case, so i turned AC down and temp climbed to 75. knots the next day.

the temp increase helped the peat evaporate enough that it could pin. most started from under the casing though, so I didn't see them in time and misted anyway:facepalm:  i think thats why a lot ofthem almost have a vert/bacterial rot look to them

All it matters is that they are still able to get you to the moon. I understand the frustration though, growing is much more fulfilling when the fruits are picture perfect.

Casing with unpasteurized peat, no contam?

So i could start doing that my side also hehe

I always pasteurize my peat, but never add any lime to it, and it seems to do well and never contaminated

So tell me how unpasteurized peat works with you, so my lazy ass can start doing that also :lmafo:

i dont pasteurize it when I case edibles, just cubes, because tubs don't have the best air movement.

i add limestone, but not hydrated lime.  pasteurize 30 minutes at 140.

i think it largely depends on the quality of the peat moss, the way you buffer it, and amount of air movement that determines how successful unpasteurized peat moss can be.

BUT….it did peak my interest, so i cased a cube tub with unpasteurized peat yesterday.  ill let you know how it goes.

Probably because the pan mycelium grew too fast for anything else to germinate. It's always good to pasteurize your peat casings. I have had good results chucking my pre-pasteurized casing soil in the microwave but I wouldn't recommend that  It had been sitting in the open bag for a while and I was pasteurizing it until a fellow shroomerite told me to try microwaving. So far so good but when I get my new peat, I will definitely pasteurize properly. Half assing it rarely got me anywhere, can't see why I should cut corners now that I got the hang of it.

i always end up prepping too much casing, so it will sit out hydrated in a bucket unpasteurized at my place. i smoke inside, and windows open24/7. literally no contamination. microbes are awesome:cool:

i think peat gets a bad rep, but if anyone is scared, just hydrate some peat and leave it out in your place and see how long it takes to contaminate. i think you will be surprised,i know I was, and Im a paranoid freak when it comes to contaminates.

but to clarify, I still recommend pasteurizing it for cube tubs.

I'm just running this little diddy for shits and giggles.

I honesly never saw a contam in my stored casing before. Until yesterday, I saw a ball of puffy mycelium and I chucked that bit in the trash. Who knows? It could have been a mycelium fragment from mixing the spawn and straw which ended up back in the tote after I threw what was left in there. It grew puffy within 24 or 48 hours though so I don't know how possible that is. I do know that this variety I'm working with atm is super aggressive. It recovered from the shake and spawn in less than 24 hours. It's been 4 days now and this is what it looks like now, very close to 100%.

I'm hoping that this batch of straw doesn't get mold. It will definitely make my bulk worries go away if it works.

That looks a bit like this brown sporulating mold I've seen recently.

I'd get rid of that sub asap before it infects any others nearby.

I hope you plan on dehydrating those properly, friend :cookiemonster:

Otherwise you should just brew them into a tea and freeze it.

Each piece has at least an eigth of shrooms in it, and they do not taste shroomy at all.

Oh, and they are made with Reese's chocolate.
