PF-Tek or Rye grain
    #694423 - 06/22/02 11:18 PM (20 years, 5 months ago)

I've tried the PF-Tek once, and failed. I'm quite sure that the contamination was due to me being stupid while they incubated. I now have a PC and want to try growing on rye. I've been reading up on rye teks for a while. It seems to me like it'd be a lot easier than the PF-tek, also with less to go wrong. Any oppinoins/suggestions would be great.

Get the pf tek to work and then do grains. Thats my advice. Grains can be a little tricky for newbies. Its not hard. Take your time and do it right. Be patient with it and practice good sterile technique.

In reply to:

I wasn't asking for cynicism

Neither was I and then you posted this to my kind reply:

"How can grains be "tricky"? I've read numerous teks and thier dosn't seem to be much "trick" to anything.'

In reply to:

I answered you're question. Did you not see it? Here's my "answer" again:

"Get the pf tek to work and then do grains. Thats my advice. Grains can be a little tricky for newbies. Its not hard. Take your time and do it right. Be patient with it and practice good sterile technique. "

Now...that was a very polite and well meant reply that I made to your question and you had to come back like a little punk and act like the advice I just gave you was the stupidest shit you ever heard....Fuck off. Anybody thats grown shrooms already, which you have not, will give you the same answer i did.

Fuckin newbies...

no dude... I was replying to this...
"This coming from a guy who failed at the PF tek..."
I guess I took it the wrong way, I've had a very long day in the HOT New Mexico desert.

I understand that your first reply was "very polite and well meant"

However, in reply to your last reply...

FUCK YOU!

I may be inexperienced in mushroom cultivation, but that's no reason to assume that I'm just some dumb "punk" who is simply looking for an answer I want to hear. I'm not stupid like that. I'm fuckin' sick of all you so-called "elite" cultivators bashing on the "newbies". That's just fuckin' stupid. It was my impression that this forum is for people who are having trouble and seeking help. I guess I was wrong. Seriously, how fuckin' hard is it to answer a simple question!?!?!?!?!?!?

So, I ask again....

How can grains be "tricky"?

Give a valid answer, or keep your "newbie" bashing, cynical and assholic elitist bullshit to yourself. Because I personally dont want to hear it any more.

PF Tek has a very low rate of contamination when done right.

Grains are a "little tricky" because they will contaminate VERY easily if you don't use almost perfect sterile technique. Many people use laminar flow hoods with grains because of this. Some even add H202 to the grains to prevent contams. It's not a lot harder than the pf tek but there are are few more things you need to pay close attention to in order for it to work.

That's why I recommended completing the PF tek first. You dont have to be as sterile and perfect with the pf tek and it will still work fine. You dont even need a pressure cooker to use the pf tek.

That should answer your question

Now. As far as the other stuff goes...

The reason I said this:

"This coming from a guy who failed at the PF tek."

Your reply to my first post sounded very much like you thought my advice was shit. I am not an "elite" cultivator by any means. I have been studying this stuff for years though and I'm very sure it is a very good idea to succeed with the pf tek before moving on to grains and casings. Its kinda like you gotta crawl before you can walk.

It's not a good idea to admit failing at the pf tek, get on here and ask for advice from people, and then dismiss the advice as bullshit.

If this is not the case then I'm sorry but it just really looks that way to me.

In reply to:

It was my impression that this forum is for people who are having trouble and seeking help.

It is...I gave you the best advice I could think of. Many people will say its best to get the pf tek right first.

In reply to:

"newbie" bashing, cynical and assholic elitist bullshit

Thats hilarious if you read it twice... You obviously said that without reading any of my other posts.

After looking at your post again:

"How can grains be "tricky"? I've read numerous teks and thier dosen't seem to be much "trick" to anything."

I must concede that this reply may very well not have been as bad as it sounded at first.

But surely you can see how I might take it that way.

Sorry and good luck with the grain.

Hey there,

Can you give me a little bit of insight on using Hydrogen Peroxide? Based on what I have read, it has no ill effect on the mycelium and even seems to enhance the process speed wise. Bassplayer74, can you give any guidance on that issue as I have one test jar of rye berries that has been inouculated with a PR syr...can a small amount of this be added after the fact to assist with the jar sterile?

Best regards,

KingBolete

Sure,

I read in Mycofiles bulk neglect report that he adds 12cc's of h202 to one quart jar of grain after sterilization and at the time of innoculation.

I will try to dig up some more info on it for ya...
