Does anyone else here fly fish? I just a week with my sons in upstate Pa. and had an awesome time. The hatches were in good form and the trout were heavy. The ones in the pics range between 18 and 22" and are all different trout. The dude in the pic is not me, he's my son lol.

Thanks....Yeah....I've been tying and fishing since I was 10 yrs. old....56 now...The cool thing is when you see your sons do the same and begin to be better fishermen than me. It truly is a beautiful sport.

Can't believe I missed this thread! Been fly fishing for 20 years now. I love it. My father has taken my brother and I up on an annual fishing trip in Montana our whole adult lives. Looks like you and your son have the same type of relationship. Truly a relaxing vacation when you can hit the river to chuck some bugs around and grin out.
Nice fish! Thanks for sharing!
I head to Montana the 1st week of August so I'll post some pics after the trip.
This was me wading the Madison last year. After lunch I found an epic seam off that grass point and proceeded to put on a clinic for my friends that were watching. Railed like 20 fish in an hour.

Missed this to. I plan on getting into fly fishing soon. Mainly for small mouth. Have a river walking distance from me that is full of small mouth. I wouldn't mind fishing steel head either.

That is some beautiful scenery there. I may start doing some western fishing in the next couple years. Is August a pretty good time for hatches out there?...Giant stone flies, caddis?

August is solid for hoppers and the usual suspects like caddis, etc. The fish are all fat gorged and aggressive. Less crowded too. We usually go in August if there is a good snow pack. A lot of it is based on the snow pack because the water level is really pulled down by the agriculture in Montana.
The stone fly hatch is only two weeks and is in June range. If you can hit it the fishing is epic.
I have fished with the same guides for almost 15 years now so if you ever need info PM me. They are good dudes. Best fishing I've ever done.
This will give you an idea of how many rivers are accessible in this one spot: http://4riversmontana.com/

No there are public boat launches and accesses everywhere on the rivers. We hire guides and do float trips. If we are there a week usually 4 floats and 2 wading days on our own. The floats are when you get the fatties and stop to wade spots like that where you can't access by foot/car.

Leaving for Montana on Saturday AM and I can hardly contain myself. 4 days of float trips and at least 2 days of walk and wades this year. There may be a reality TV crew filming us for a TV show about fishing guides so I hope they hook me up with some HD footage of me catching a bunch of fish.

Spring River browns are huge! I'll check out the Buffalo online that sounds sweet. I used to live in Shreveport so I went up to Broken Bow, OK a few times but never had the time to get to up further.

Nice man it is nice and cool up there. Down in the forks it is like it is like 85-90 right now but I think we'll be good as long as it doesn't go over 90. Then they start shutting rivers down @ 2PM

Get em boy!
The rainstorms have everything all jacked up around here. Forced to go up past the Feather River because the dam is coming apart! I was going to try to get to skwala stonefly hatch that goes off a few hours north in Feb/March but it just won't stop raining. March brown mayflys are my next bet to get up there for some rainbows next month. Rain rain go away! It's bitter sweet because it ended the drought but now it won't stop. Rivers are cookin!

Yeah, high water sucks...especially when it muddies the water. Pretty much kills any dry fly activity and stops you from fishing anywhere but behind boulders or other eddie areas with nymphs or buggers.
I've fished parts of the Truckee and Smith Rivers out your way...they are gorgeous trout streams. good luck to you!

Definitely going to fish the Truckee this summer
A guy my brother knows has a huge place right on the Smith and he finally invited us out there. Can't wait to fish it!
Good luck and post some pics if you get anything!

I just got back from my first real flyfishing experience, and it was a blast! My buddy does a week long trip on the Lower Deshutes river every May during the salmon fly hatch, and invited me to join him and his brother. I could only make it for two of the days, but it was an awesome time. He lent me 90% of the gear for the fishing part as all I have are a pair of waders I bought the day before I left.
I ended up only catching 3 fish over the 2 full days of fishing, but what a thrill it is to catch a nice trout on a dry fly. The first one I brought in was a nice 14 incher, and the other 2 were smaller around 11-12. I had a ton of rises for my fly, but wasn't to great on setting the hook, so I am going to have to work on that for future outings. I'll post a picture or two once he gets back in town tomorrow as he has the pictures on his phone. Here is one as I was driving out of the canyon on my way home. It was such a beautiful area, even if we didn't fish I would have had a great time just camping there.

Nice move! Pretty zen to be out there in those kind of places huh? A true vacation where you can disconnect with society and reconnect with nature.
I agree with you on the beauty of good remote fishing areas. When I do float trips I'll take at least one break a day where I just sit back and look at all the scenery from the boat. By the looks of that picture I bet there is some super deluxe stargazing going on at night too.

Indeed, very zen being out there without having to worry about work, money, etc. Each night I made sure to take 5 minutes from fishing and just sit on a rock with my boots in the water and check out the scenery as the sun was going down over the canyon walls.
And the stars were amazing as we sat around the fire both nights.

You're a grinner dude. Sounds like you'll make a fine fly fisherman.
I'll be up in Northern Idaho in July. It should produce some nice Cutthroat pictures to post. Maybe I'll get lucky and find a Bull Trout with a streamer. Can't wait. I have some sweet spots that I couldn't fish when I was there a couple years ago because of the weak ass snow pack that year.

Man, you guys fishing out west make me jealous...I am drooling at the thought of going back out there but have a tough time getting away from work.I love hearing about guys catching their first trout on a dry fly...It's like they just got hooked and will forever be a fly fisherman.
I did my May excursion into Northern Pa. again this year and we had a great week..caught several in the 20" range and a bunch in th 10-15" range. We had some great BWO hatches in the mornings and pretty good March Brown, Grey fox, caddis, green drake and sulfur hatches in the evenings. Also had some pretty good rusty spinner falls at dark.
The highlight of my trip was taking my childhood friend with us this year...We used to flyfish when we were kids but he stopped for the last 40 years. Holy shit is he hooked now.....dude went and bought new Simms guide waders and 5 different fly rods...lol. I've created a monster.....Well...here's to good fishing for you all!

Speaking of buying rods, I'm in the market for buying my first rod and reel. I've been looking into the rod reel combos since I'm new to everything and feel like that might be the best way for me to get into it without spending a bunch. Does anyone have any suggestions? The buddy I've gone fishing with a couple times recommended a 5 way 9 foot pole. He said that should work for everything I want to do.
I also plan on getting my best friend a ride as he's moving out here in two weeks to Oregon from Illinois. I know he would enjoy a flyfishing so this will be his little 'welcome to Oregon' gift from me. . Here are the two combos that I found so far that look decent with good name brands. Any recommendations?

http://www.orvis.com/store/product.aspx?pf_id=8P43&dir_id=758&group_id=759&cat_id=5978&subcat_id=7309
I'm going to head to our local flyfishing supply shop in town later today as I found they he carries Redington brands. I looked at his website and he has them listed at $220 and I found multiple places online that some for around 190. I would much rather support my local business but it's tough when I could save 30 bucks a set, and since I'm getting two that be $60. And that $60 would go along way with buying flies and other supplies like tippett, leaders, and what not.

I'm fishing the Clarke Fork next week in western Montana. We are doing a 14 mile float so I should have some fish porn to throw up when I get back. Might wade some Idaho water for Cutthroat too if my girl lets me. I have a new 7 weight 10 foot Sage Z Axis rod for throwing streamers so I should boot out a big brown in Montana. So amped up for this trip.
@dodgem I have fished both of those rods in my time. The Redington is the way to go. Better rod and reel in my opinion. 5 weight 9 foot is the best size for a first rod. Nice move! Get busy!

Yeah....a 5 weight 9' is what I would recommend....Even the Orvis Clearwater series is good for a beginner rod...maybe a Battenkill reel.
Can't wait to hear about the Clarke fork trip Star...sounds like an amazing day.

I went with two of the Redington Topo outfits, one each for my buddy and I. Can't wait for them to come in and him to get here next week so we can get out on the water and catch dem fishies!
I went fishing a couple weeks ago with my buddy, but I only had about 24 hours there so ended up empty handed that time. We went up to the Cascade Lakes, easily one of the most breathtaking places I have camped/fished. The sunsets while on the water were unreal.

Just bellow the second dam in oroville, Used to kill it using fly rod with small red bead. Steel Head. Nice browns in those waters as well. Up on the lake,North end. Lime saddle was all about fly rod and small poppers top water fishing the big bass back there. The outlet down by the after bay just below oroville was good for the bi annual kings, Good times for sure.

Had a great day on the Clark Fork. It was 95 degrees so it almost shut down the rive activity but I managed to get around 25 trout to eat my bugs. 1/2 on a hopper and 1/2 on the PT I was dropping off the hopper. I could tell the run we floated had potential to easily have 40-50 fish days when the temperature was lower and a lot of dry fly love. The scenery was 2nd to none. The river is nice and wide. It had that rocky mountain feel and two or three old "Stand By Me" bridges for the train. Only had one fish over 20". The rest were 16-18". Hope everyone is having a good summer chucking bugs and grinnin.

That's a fat bow....too bad the weather was so hot for you....I'm not a fan of fishing on hot days...especially in a boat. looks like a beautiful river. If you don't mind me asking, what is a PT? I use droppers a lot but usually small nymphs...not sure if that is what you are talking about.

It's a pheasant tail nymph. They use these rather large flashback style pheasant tail nymphs in Montana that never fail in bigger rivers.

I see...I use pheasant tails in the #16-20 range as droppers....never heard them called PT's before lol. It is funny how often they take them rather than the dry.

I have been out a couple times this past week to the Middle Fork of the Willamette River up near Oakridge, OR. My buddy Ben that I bought the rod for and I went with my 'mentor' and his girl a few days ago and we all ended up with 5-10 smaller guys around 8 in and then one or two closer to 12, nothing crazy big though. We checked out a few different spots and had good success each time. Ben caught his first rainbow trout and first ever fish on a fly rod, it was an awesome day!
Yesterday I went out with Ben and another new friend who bought his first ever fly rod set up the day before. We stopped at a new spot that looked decent and boy was it productive. Ben caught one before I was even done showing the new guy how to set up his rod, and it didn't slow down after that. I ended up with close to 15 overall, mostly smaller again but had one nice 13 or 14'er that was a lot of fun. I was able to witness the new guy catch his first ever fish on a flyrod from a distance and gave him a nice hoot and haller while he was reeling it in. And then later he caught a fatty that was around 15 which was pretty exciting. It was getting late and we still had to drive 30 minutes to our campground but I just did not want to put my rod down as fish we rising for our flies until the very end.
It has been fun 'teaching' the newbies what little knowledge I have of the sport, and has really made me better as well. Can't wait to get back out there!

Broke my rod tip by rolling up my window a few days back. Stop by my local fly shop and had it sent in for repair/replacement. Going to be 2 weeks until I get it back.

Happens to us all....Have you ever left your rod on top of your vehicle and drove off?...Lol..I have more than once. The manufacturer will probably just send you a new rod tip.

My buddy that got me in to fly fishing last year flew home for a week and had me watch his house/dogs for him. I took full advantage of his fly tying room and some youtube videos and tied my first flies. They started out pretty rough, but once I got the hang of things they kept looking better and better. I made 4 adams flies, and the difference between the first fly and the last one is quite comical. It was awesome understanding the process of how the flies are put together and tied, but the best part was catching a fish with my own fly!
I took my girlfriend out last week for her first fly fishing experience and we had a blast! I caught two trout with my own fly and then let my girlfriend use it and she caught two more (that being her first fish with a fly rod as well)!
Here are two of the flies I tied.

Here is the spot we have fished the last couple times out (this is just a small section of the river). There are a couple different seams that I have great luck on so far, and a couple other nice spots as well. Great when 2 or 3 of us go out as there is plenty of room for us all to spread out and do our own thing.

Looks like maybe an elk hair caddis and an adams?....cool stuff! What a good feeling it is to catch them on flies that you tie yourself.

Correct on both. We are going to have a few fly tying nights this winter, which will be nice since with all the rain here it is hard to do much else. And that way I'll be stocked up on flies for the upcoming year.
I have made it out 3 times this past week, checking out new sections of the middle fork of the Willamette River. I've had decent success at most spots, and great success at one of them. Had a nice 13 in+ rainbow give me a battle before busting off right before I could net him. I was able to land a couple nice 12 inchers yesterday before heading in to work.
Time to get some October Caddis out on the water and see what is biting.

Just wanted to post to get updates. Been fly fishing (almost exclusively) for ~15 years. I totally caught the bug first time out after catching several browns on dry flies. Only problem is the Canadian winter when I have to hang of the rod for the season. As we are plunged into a wickedly cold deep freeze I feel some relief in knowing that we are only 6 Mondays away from spring
Would be great if we could all post some spring trout pics caught on the fly.

I'm finally done with a lifetime of fishing but I used to really enjoy fly fishing smallmouth bass in Michigan rivers with home tied streamers.

Sorry to hijack this thread but just wanted to tell you guys about a trade proposal I put on the marketplace and figured lots of people may not look at the marketplace. Anyways I'm trying to get some more edible cultures to work with. I literally have everything fly fishing and would love to make a trade. If u have cultures then let me know what you want or need in fly fishing and I will get it for you.

I love the N. Umpqua I like the Williamson down southern Oregon way. Oregon has outstanding fly fishing for some very very big fish. The Wood river is another small river that has lots of 5-10 pd trout. Bows Browns, and Brookies.

I have fished the McKenzie a handful of times just upstream of Eugene and have had a blast catching some nice rainbows.
I just camped on the N. Umpqua last weekend, but have yet to take my rod with my while out there. Going to have to do that some time soon!

The North Umpqua can be a mother fucker to learn, but when she starts unlocking herself, I can't imagine a cooler place to fish, not to mention, the big steelhead.

I have not done any steelhead fishing yet, so if you have any advice you are willing to share I am all ears. I just started fly fishing this past year and have only targeted bows and browns so far, but would like to expand that to steelhead, bull, and salmon this coming year.

dodgem, My big thing is keep it simple, pink yarn ball flies will produce more fish than an expensive intruder. You don't need a spey rod, and a dozen different heads. If we get a good summer run in the Mckenzie this year they are a great place to pop your cherry.

I fish the The great Lakes tribs for steelies. Theres an amazing amount of techniques that work, but float fishing is probably the easiest and requires less investment. Steelhead can be picky..when the usual stuff isnt working...sometimes just offering something different can make a huge difference.

That's funny....because my one trip to Yellowstone....I tore the cutthroat up on that glow bug pattern......very underrated pattern for any of the rainbow relatives.

Yep, glow bugs for the win! Some days they aren't the best, but overall I would say it is my most consistent fly for steelies.
Doesn't hurt that they are also super cheap

I got a bad ass cutty on the north ump yesterday on a go Bug, I thought it was a little steelhead at first, he was jumping and pulling drag. Those things catch fish just about everywhere. And then there’s the bead too, just not legal in fly only water in a Oregon.

Just hit my favorite Central Pa. river for the grannom caddis hatch.....usually phenominal in the middle of April....lol, this year, they haven't even started yet. Had some BWO's but nothing was feeding on them. Wound up hitting a stocked stream and caught 9 on beadhead hares ear and some small buggers. It was 88 degrees, lol and 45 the following day. crazy weather.

Hey man hope all is well. Been a while since I've been around. Busy raising my first born son the last 6 months so you know how that goes.
I just got my visa and made my last payment for my dream trip to the Kamchatka peninsula in Russia. I fly in and then take a military chopper to the Zhupanova river for a 5 day float. Uncharted territory with 35" rainbows. Fishing huge streamers and skating mouse patterns on the top with 8 weight rods. Going to be epic. Should have some bad ass pics for you in the August.
Glad you were able to shift gears and pulls some up with the buggers the other day!

My first trout trip of 2018 is next Thurs-Sun if the ice has sufficiently melted from the lakes I intend to paddle.

Biggest trout to date! So much fun the past couple weeks catching big rainbows and some decent sized brookies. Summer in OR is awesome!

Beautiful fish! Looks like some nice water.
I've yet to get out for trout yet this year. Landed quite a few pike and bass on flies though.
Something feels far more special about getting a trout on a fly. I think it might be because tricking pike/bass feels easier.
tight lines!

Got back from Russia. Slayed em on the Zhupanova river. Had to show you guys a couple of 30" rainbows and a super khundza. Many other fish averaged 25-27". Unreal fishing. Still can't believe I was actually there.

100% just fucking incredible!....I've actually got wood at the moment. Did these giants jump like typical bows do? What kind of set up were you using?...my guess would be an 8 wt. rod with maybe a 3X or 4X tippet? Slinging buggers?
I'm gonna put this place on my bucket list.

Wow!
I'd also like to hear a little bit about the gear/flies. I've heard tales of these monsters delicately sipping dry flies from time to time. Would be super cool to get one on a dry.

I fished a 12 foot 7 weight Sage Z Axis switch rod. We were using 15LB tapered leaders that I would trim back and even made some 18LB leaders. Big fat #4 Dhali Llama streamers. Black and white, olive and white, tan and white. Then the mouse patterns called Mr Hankey. Had to pinch barbs on all.
You catch a lot of Dollies and salmon so you have to have big gear. Even those big rainbows and khundzas would break you off if you didn't. The rainbows would go ape shit on the top water, big acrobatic jumps like 3-7 times and some would tail walk like a marlin in the side channels when mousing. Some of the big rainbows and khundzas would hit so hard I thought for sure I snagged a rock until all hell broke loose. Some the them would pull line through my finger as they ran and there was nothing I could do about it. Burned like hell haha

We would see fish and show them everything with no avail then get them to eat a dry. I got one of those that was behind a tree in the water on a sculpin fly that I casted over the tree and let it dangle about 2 feet in front of it's face then it attacked and I got em.
The best was moving a fish on a streamer. Pulling over right after someone hooked up giving me enough time to walk back upstream to tie on a mouse and get him to eat. So cool.
The mouse takes were either it sucked the whole thing down, a quick take from behind or just an absolute demolishing of the mouse. Each fly had crazy teeth marks on the foam. It was sweet.

Wow! Those rainbows hitting mouse patterns sounds crazy! As for the 2 wt. outfit....that must be like waving a willow branch, lol. Never went below 4 wt.myself. Incidentally, the man who developed that sculpin pattern (Ed Shenk) was from my area growing up..he used that as a big trout fly with a lot of success on some of the small spring creeks in central Pa. He was also a friend and fishing buddy of a couple guys that taught me how to fly fish..(Joe Lehner and Ed Koch).

Had no idea there was a flyfishing thread! Good to know there are other anglers on the shroomery!
I've been fishing a local section of the st. vrain in colorado. It's a few blocks from my house. Caught a 10in rainbow the other day but it flopped off my line as i was about to pull her in and get a pic.
Here are some pics of other fish and habitat

A nice sized male creek chub

A little blue gill. These dudes are aggressive fighters for their size
After the floods in Co in 2013 a bunch of warm water fish got into the rivers here.
I also recently got i to tying flies
Parachute Adams size 18

Pheasant tail nymph size 18

Mosquito size 18

And a griffiths gnat size 18

Ill post some more pics as fall goes on! Streamer season here so I'm bustin out the bigger hooks

Love little creeks like that. While it is fun to punch big flies to the opposite bank of a substantial river, I much prefer chasing little fish in skinny water with 7.5 ft 3wt. That pheasant tail looks great! Caught many trout with #16-18 PTs.

I already booked to go back with my brother and father for 2021. It was the most profound fishing and outdoor experience I have ever had. If I was rich I would book the float for like 3 weeks to a month straight so I could spend time doing other things besides fish in that habitat. Meditate, hike, explore, stalk animals for photos like moose/grizzly/mink, find artifacts and fossils. I brought back this rock that I am pretty sure is a fossilized paw print of a cat or something. I'll take a pic and post it soon.
If you take advise on hook setting nymphs I recommend setting across your chest fast and hard. So if you are holding the rod in your right hand basically slam the reel to your left shoulder/arm pit. If you miss em whatever. If you set the hook nice and hard it will be stuck well in the corner of the jaw then a lot harder to come unbuttoned. I set my shit 10 times harder than I did back in the day.
Drys are different though.

Yeah pretty much everywhere I fish for trout has barbless regulations. Better for the mortality rate on the fish too. Got used to pinching the barbs wherever I go.
Once I was fishing in Oklahoma and a game warden ran my fly hooks through cotton balls. One wasn't pinched good enough and I had to pay a $135 ticket on the spot to avoid driving back to go to court. A total racket. He got like 5 or 6 people in 45 minutes. Most of us basically got fucked because we didn't file the barbs off.

That SUX balls man! Warden must have been on his period.
We don't need to pinch the barbs here in Australia but when I plan on releasing the fish I catch I pinch them. So my fly box is 50/50 with barbed and barbles flies

I FF for smallies pretty regularly. Everyone starts FF somewhere. I started on steelheads. Not a good place to start, as it can be almost impossible to trick a steelhead at the best of times. Smallies on the other hand consist primarily of mouths and stomachs. You'd be hard pressed to not trick a smallie. Give top water flies a shot as the hit is generally explosive. So much fun! The other upside is that pike often co-habitate with bass and taking a pike on a surface fly is raw and primitive.

I’ve never done it, but one of my buddies slays with his rig. Don’t get fooled into buying a euro line, just spool up with 20# mono. The only reason coated “euro lines” exist is because certain competitions require you have a “fly line” on your spool. The folks who invented the rig would just use mono if not In these competitions. It works.

I have put a euro nymphing setup and it seems to work good. I’m not doing for competitions, just to catch fish. I went out for trout and got a down running steelhead, some trout, some whitefish, and hooked something to big to let me get a look at it, probably a sucker.

Hi guys....been a while, but we just got back from our upstate Pa. trip. We did excellent on First Fork of Sinnemahoning. Several big fish...my son's pic is below with a 24" golden or palomino trout he caught on a caddis pupae. We didn't have great hatches but had some amazing rusty dun spinner falls and good nymph fishing everywhere we went. It was a blast!

Nice palomino trout. I never fished the First Fork of Sinnemahoning. A friend of mine has a cabin in central Potter County so I never made it over that far for fishing but we used to fish the East Fork of Sinnemahoning near Cherry Springs. Nice country up in that region.

We also fish Kettle, Cross Fork, Young Womans, Little Pine,Slate Run, Cedar Run and Big Pine creeks. The East Fork flows into the First fork of Sinnemahoning at Wharton. There is a project a couple miles down the road that has some very good fishing. You should check it out.

Rainbow. Folks call them redside trout in this river. They are gorgeous fish swimming in a gorgeous waterway, and make their way close to 20 inches in there.

Yeah, You can catch the native brookies all over some of the smaller streams. I fished Hammersly 30 years ago with my dad in an amazing green drake hatch/ coffin fly spinner fall. the creek was boiling with little brook trout. Tried it a couple years later after a pretty bad drought and found very few mayflies or trout. Kinda gave up on it after that.

Well, you’d never guess it by my user name but I fly fish, too. It’s been a minute since I wet a line but that has everything to do with a somewhat recent addition to the family unit. I live in Maryland and mostly fish the Gunpowder, Savage, and a handful of Brooke streams. I occasionally aggravate myself on the well-know Limestone spring creeks in SC PA as well. Here’s a pic from a trip a few years back when I was so excited to go fishing I forgot my rod. Luckily I remembered my vest and first aid kit and was able to whittle out a terrible fly rod with safety pin guides and duct tape reel seat hardware so the trip wasn’t a total bust. I fished with this rod all weekend and caught a pile of Brookies.

That is what I call a desire to fish! Just goes to show you that you can't squelch the spirit of a fly fisherman. That's a pretty brookie too.
I just returned from another upstate Pa trip and we did great! A couple browns and rainbows over 24" and several in the 18-19" range. Pine Creek came out the best this year although we were early for the major hatches. There were plenty of small caddis and a decent march brown hatch on kettle and Pine creeks. We hit some monsters on Pine. Here is one that my older son caught. ....a little over 24". My buddy caught a brown the same size and I busted a couple off that were easily that size. By the way, I grew up fishing the Yellow Breeches and Letort, Green Spring and Big Spring. One of the old fly fishing greats from back in the day just passed....Ed Shenk. The friend that mentored me in my early days fished a lot with Ed. He was famous for the Sculpin pattern and the Cress bug pattern for the spring creeks. He also fished a 6-1/2 ft rod when everyone else was using 8 or 9 footers. Anyway! Good fishing everyone!!

Any midwest flyfishers out there? I learned how to fly fish (mostly just for trout) when I moved to Oregon a few years ago, and just moved back to IL. Hoping to still utilize my gear while I am back here. I know of a couple rivers in Iowa near us that they stock with trout, but that is it for trout. I think it could be fun to try and fool some bass or crappie on some lakes or rivers out here.

I grew up in Mt. Holly Springs. Some of my favorite streams are in Franklin Cty....The Blacklog and Little J. The latter has the best grannom hatch that I have ever seen.

Went down to the great sand dune national park and did some fishing near medano pass. Caught a bunch of these rio grande cutthroat trout, an endangered native trout species.

You can see the red jawline from this angle

Not huge fish by any means but feisty little buggers!

Hiked out to some back country mountain streams and caught a mess of greenback cutthroat (native endangered species) and even snagged a cutbow! Hybrid of the native greenback cutthroat and a rainbow.

This one is the cutbow

Good shot of the red throat stripe

Thanks man!
No all top water.
Been using a hybrid brooks sprout and parachute adams that I started tying and it catches fish for real. My favorite fly by far.
Same as the parachute adams but instead of a cattle hair post I use a white rubber leg. Helps it stay afloat with no floatant and I can see it better.

Beautiful pics. Thanks for posting. I've been doing a lot of FFishing with top water flies for bass and pike lately. I'll try to grab some pics and post up to this thread. While trout is my first FFishing love, there is something pretty exciting about a pike taking a frog popper off of the surface. They are not much more than teeth and an insatiable stomach.

Those greenback cutthroat are quite lovely. I wasn't aware that they were endangered. I suspect high stick euro nymphing would absolutely kill it there. Like fish lit every cast. Nows the time throw dries tho if you want some top water action. Whatevers hatching and ur bugs and terrestrial heel any attractor pattern will draw rise this time of year. Its great to get after it in the back country where they dont see many artificial flies.

Oh man that's why I love the back country streams. Feel like I get a hit every cast!
Never caught a pike but every video I've seen of them makes them look like a blast to fight and aggressive hitters

That's a good question because most pike fishing is done with bait casting equipment and wire leaders. I guess with FF you just have to get lucky and lip hook them.

@chief- ya euro nymphing works pretty well on these small mountain streams but I dont do much lower column fishing. Sometimes I like to tie on a weighted prince hybrid swing fly and dead drift it. Caught lots of fat trout that way.

I use a 2x or 3x tapered leader and 10lb test fluorocarbon tippet. I also cross my fingers and hope for a lip hook. They are efficient predators; sometimes fully breaching the surface to take a fly popper.

Hiked a couple miles up a backcountry stream and caught a bunch of 8-10" browns and a few greenback cutthroat that I forgot to get photos of like an idiot
Some habitat shots and a feesh

The pics are hazy cause there is a few fires raging here in co. Seriously cant see the mountains at all from a distance and smoke is visibly hanging in the air

Haze or not, that is a pretty little mountain stream. I haven't tossed a fly in many moons, but that water beckons . . .

Yes. They are eating machines. I have caught a 6 inch Northern on a 6 inch rapala.

looked it up they selltapered wire leaders that are either knottable or have about snap to attach flie to. Might get some when I get my 8 wt fixed (car door) we have some pike management lakes here that are really starting to produce and a private stock reservoir with musky that are now getting to the size of very large pike but I haven't seen any true monster in state for musky

A couple buddies and I went out to the driftless area in NE Iowa and fished a few different streams this fall. I brought in a handful of browns and rainbows, and a couple brookies, and had a blast doing it! I learned to fly fish in Oregon so fishing these little streams in Iowa is a bit different, but I love the opportunity to get back on the water and get away from everything else. Reading up more on the area so once I recover from my knee surgery we can get back out there this spring and get after it!

Me too. Small upside of fishing on the hard is how clean/fresh the fish taste. In the spring-fall I generally release everything I catch. In the winter they just taste too fresh to let go.

In the winter (on ice) I target pickerel/walleye and perch. Generally I use soft rubber jigs or salted minnows. For me, this is a way to pass the time after my muscles are too tired/sore from snowmobiling.
In the spring-fall I target chinook salmon, steelhead, rainbow, bass and pike on the fly. Each of these offers something special as there is nothing like catching fish on the fly. Probably my favorite (and I'm sure I'm not alone) is tricking a picky trout with a dry fly. I've also grown to love the last second tail-slap rejection of the same picky trout-- true exhilaration.

Yeah I mostly go for trout but my parents like on a lake now so it's just too easy to ice fish there. It's not like some premiere fishing lake tho and no trout. But it's an absolute panfish bonanza over there all huge schools of perch and slab crappie and u can catch a million <1lb bass. I've read it's just over populated with small bass and panfish and killing fish in certain slot limits will help to bring more balance. Basically there's too many small bass born every year so they eat all the food. Anyway it's great in spring and summer to thro your various bass bugs and panfish poppers. It's a fish every cast but rarely a lunker. Decent pickerel tho when u find one. I ended up having to swap the carb on my auger last week so she's screwing hard now. Panfish bonanza time

A couple buddies and I made it up to a few streams in NE Iowa again to get our feet wet. Not much luck on the day as the previous week of -10 to -25 degree temps left a good amount of ice on the water.
My friend from Oregon just put a few dozen flies in the mail that he tied for me, so excited to get those and get back out there.

Not exactly sure. Fluorocarbon ~ 50 - 100 lb. test ~ 6 in. Gotta be short enough to work a fly. Pretty sure he ties all his own shit.

What kinda rod/line were u using? Looks nice BTW. What size/weight fly? We now have an established tiger muskey population here as well as several pike management lakes. I'm sure they're a bit more wiley than the alligators up north. I feel like up there u could throw anything and catch these motherfuckers. It's like brook trout fishing in Labrador or something. Around here u have to be a bit more cleaver.

Braided line ~ 60 lb. test. Pretty much the heaviest fly rod/reel one can get. Again he ties his own. That water is pretty stained though so the colors have to be bright. Where are you located may I ask?

I'm in CT the land where we dammed or polluted all our rivers to build this country back in the day. Don't disturb too much soil wading out here. We don't have deep lakes we only have little dinkers left by the melting of the last ice age. I've been thinking alot about braided but I still thing these things will cut thier teeth on it. Its one those things out here same as trout where the only thing that survives to get big has seen it all and is incredibly smart. Something like a dam where ur fishing is incredibly turbid so u absolutely must use something big flashy colorful or with some rattle for these snake bastards to find it. But they certainly lurk in the murk. That's honestly thier bread and butter.

Also I meant like fly line not leader. Like we're u using some kinda sink tip? Intermidiate? What weight? Did u have much trouble getting it to turn over or throw thru wind? Or were u using some type sink leader with heavy florotippet?

Ahh. Yes it’s a different ball game between the north and the south/east as Muskie are native here. I personally hate river fishing/fishing from shore now. Gimme a boat on a nice deep, clear lake and it’s like golfing 18 holes versus playing mini golf. We got skunked down in KY a few weeks ago and even a guide on the musky 360 podcast told us “Wisconsinites are spoiled with your lakes up there.”
Anyhow, i hear a lot of states are stocking tigers now and it’s starting to catch on so if you have a decent population finally I’d hit it hard. Definitely use braided line and a leader if targeting Muskie.

The lakes here are privately stocked and managed for tiger musky by permit only and there seems to be a hell of alot of idiots out especially after covid. But I'm positive theres some real monsters out there. Pike it's like u go fish for them and ur not sure half the time if u caught a really small pike or really big pickerel until u get a close look.

Welp when you hook into a decent sized Muskie, hell even a small Muskie you’ll know instantly. It’s like arm-wrestling versus a handshake. I’d also highly recommend a bait caster setup instead. The longer the cast, the more time they have to follow. Figure eights are a bitch.

Oh no. They tug and run plenty. It’s just real, actual muscle. Even with a pool stick for a rod and 80 lb test it’s incredible. I just did a bit of googling and you might have to head over to NY for the real deal, though...

After a 25 years freshwater flyfishing hiatus (was saltwater FF), i'm back in the mountains with my 3wt chasing wild rainbows and brookies. Man, how i missed these little clear streams in the deep ravines. Been hiking quite to bit to reach some of these areas, but i won't see another soul the entire day. Seen quite a few black bears and i better pay more attention as they are having their cubs. I've tried a 12ft tenkara rod, which proved to be too long for these streams (too many trees covering the streams). A 9ft with a 7ft line and 3ft leader/tippet should do nicely. The tenkara is a hoot to use after you've played with it for a few hours. You can get these rods inexpensively ($40-70). I was thinking of using that rod on the way back (downstream) to swing a couple of wet flies and see what happens...

Been a while since I've gone out but got my 1st fish of the season!

Went to a town an hour or so away and fished a section of the Arkansas River that runs right through historic downtown. Feisty little feller.

Someday I'd love to learn to fly-fish from Jetties and piers in the ocean. If anyone's in Oregon and ever wants to go fishing I'm always available to make plans.

If u want to fish from piers and jetty you have to master the double haul. This brings to mind that spey casting from these places could be successful. I've fished breachway for striper and u can at times out fish everyone with the fly but it can be very difficult because of the current and wind. U really want to use a fly line that will punch thru the wind and get you down in the current. I've never actually fished from the jetty tho I've always been in a boat in or anchored off the channel

Another point is about at least definitely jetties maybe piers too is that these type of structures always and I mean always will hold a resident big fish or two. Something like that with all the bait structure and ever shifting conveyor belt buffet of water spilling in and out of the ocean/inlet or what have you there's always big fish prowling around that really don't move. The trouble is they've seen it all and don't bite anything except for a perfectly presented fly or like live eel or something idfk. Thats why although challenging it can be productive to fly fish these zones
