I am moving out to Oregon next month and have always wanted to give fly fishing a go.  I have fished a plenty here in the midwest, but not much fly fishing going on around here unfortunately.

Get em boy!

The rainstorms have everything all jacked up around here. Forced to go up past the Feather River because the dam is coming apart! I was going to try to get to skwala stonefly hatch that goes off a few hours north in Feb/March but it just won't stop raining. March brown mayflys are my next bet to get up there for some rainbows next month. Rain rain go away! It's bitter sweet because it ended the drought but now it won't stop. Rivers are cookin! :crankey:

Look at this shit!

Yeah, high water sucks...especially when it muddies the water. Pretty much kills any dry fly activity and stops you from fishing anywhere but behind boulders or other eddie areas with nymphs or buggers.

I've fished parts of the Truckee and Smith Rivers out your way...they are gorgeous trout streams. good luck to you!

Glad you have fished those! That is awesome!

Definitely going to fish the Truckee this summer

A guy my brother knows has a huge place right on the Smith and he finally invited us out there. Can't wait to fish it!

Good luck and post some pics if you get anything! :highfive:

I just got back from my first real flyfishing experience, and it was a blast!  My buddy does a week long trip on the Lower Deshutes river every May during the salmon fly hatch, and invited me to join him and his brother.  I could only make it for two of the days, but it was an awesome time.  He lent me 90% of the gear for the fishing part as all I have are a pair of waders I bought the day before I left.

I ended up only catching 3 fish over the 2 full days of fishing, but what a thrill it is to catch a nice trout on a dry fly.  The first one I brought in was a nice 14 incher, and the other 2 were smaller around 11-12.  I had a ton of rises for my fly, but wasn't to great on setting the hook, so I am going to have to work on that for future outings.  I'll post a picture or two once he gets back in town tomorrow as he has the pictures on his phone.  Here is one as I was driving out of the canyon on my way home.  It was such a beautiful area, even if we didn't fish I would have had a great time just camping there.

Nice move! Pretty zen to be out there in those kind of places huh? A true vacation where you can disconnect with society and reconnect with nature.

I agree with you on the beauty of good remote fishing areas. When I do float trips I'll take at least one break a day where I just sit back and look at all the scenery from the boat. By the looks of that picture I bet there is some super deluxe stargazing going on at night too.

:highfive:

Indeed, very zen being out there without having to worry about work, money, etc.  Each night I made sure to take 5 minutes from fishing and just sit on a rock with my boots in the water and check out the scenery as the sun was going down over the canyon walls.

And the stars were amazing as we sat around the fire both nights.

You're a grinner dude. Sounds like you'll make a fine fly fisherman.

I'll be up in Northern Idaho in July. It should produce some nice Cutthroat pictures to post. Maybe I'll get lucky and find a Bull Trout with a streamer. Can't wait. I have some sweet spots that I couldn't fish when I was there a couple years ago because of the weak ass snow pack that year.

Man, you guys fishing out west make me jealous...I am drooling at the thought of going back out there but have a tough time getting away from work.I love hearing about guys catching their first trout on a dry fly...It's like they just got hooked and will forever be a fly fisherman.

I did my May excursion into Northern Pa. again this year and we had a great week..caught several in the 20" range and a bunch in th 10-15" range. We had some great BWO hatches in the mornings and pretty good March Brown, Grey fox, caddis, green drake and sulfur hatches in the evenings. Also had some pretty good rusty spinner falls at dark.

The highlight of my trip was taking my childhood friend with us this year...We used to flyfish when we were kids but he stopped for the last 40 years. Holy shit is he hooked now.....dude went and bought new Simms guide waders and 5 different fly rods...lol. I've created a monster.....Well...here's to good fishing for you all!:raisemyglass:

Speaking  of buying rods, I'm in the market for buying my first rod and reel. I've been looking into the rod reel combos since I'm new to everything and feel like that might be the best way for me to get into it without spending a bunch. Does anyone have any suggestions? The buddy I've gone fishing with a couple times recommended a 5 way 9 foot pole. He said that should work for everything I want to do.

I also plan on getting my best friend a ride as he's moving out here in two weeks to Oregon from Illinois. I know he would enjoy a flyfishing  so this will be his little 'welcome to Oregon' gift from me. .  Here are the two combos that I found so far that look decent with good name brands. Any recommendations?

http://www.orvis.com/store/product.aspx?pf_id=8P43&dir_id=758&group_id=759&cat_id=5978&subcat_id=7309

I'm going to head to our local flyfishing supply shop in town later today as I found they he carries Redington brands. I looked at his website and he has them listed at $220 and I found multiple places online that some for around 190. I would much rather support my local business but it's tough when I could save 30 bucks a set, and since I'm getting two that be $60. And that $60 would go along way with buying flies and other supplies like tippett, leaders, and what not.

I'm fishing the Clarke Fork next week in western Montana. We are doing a 14 mile float so I should have some fish porn to throw up when I get back. Might wade some Idaho water for Cutthroat too if my girl lets me. I have a new 7 weight 10 foot Sage Z Axis rod for throwing streamers so I should boot out a big brown in Montana. So amped up for this trip.

@dodgem I have fished both of those rods in my time. The Redington is the way to go. Better rod and reel in my opinion. 5 weight 9 foot is the best size for a first rod. Nice move! Get busy!

Yeah....a 5 weight 9' is what I would recommend....Even the Orvis Clearwater series is good for a beginner rod...maybe a Battenkill reel.

Can't wait to hear about the Clarke fork trip Star...sounds like an amazing day.
