In the winter (on ice) I target pickerel/walleye and perch. Generally I use soft rubber jigs or salted minnows. For me, this is a way to pass the time after my muscles are too tired/sore from snowmobiling.
In the spring-fall I target chinook salmon, steelhead, rainbow, bass and pike on the fly. Each of these offers something special as there is nothing like catching fish on the fly. Probably my favorite (and I'm sure I'm not alone) is tricking a picky trout with a dry fly. I've also grown to love the last second tail-slap rejection of the same picky trout-- true exhilaration.

Yeah I mostly go for trout but my parents like on a lake now so it's just too easy to ice fish there. It's not like some premiere fishing lake tho and no trout. But it's an absolute panfish bonanza over there all huge schools of perch and slab crappie and u can catch a million <1lb bass. I've read it's just over populated with small bass and panfish and killing fish in certain slot limits will help to bring more balance. Basically there's too many small bass born every year so they eat all the food. Anyway it's great in spring and summer to thro your various bass bugs and panfish poppers. It's a fish every cast but rarely a lunker. Decent pickerel tho when u find one. I ended up having to swap the carb on my auger last week so she's screwing hard now. Panfish bonanza time

A couple buddies and I made it up to a few streams in NE Iowa again to get our feet wet. Not much luck on the day as the previous week of -10 to -25 degree temps left a good amount of ice on the water.
My friend from Oregon just put a few dozen flies in the mail that he tied for me, so excited to get those and get back out there.

Personally I use a bait caster but every time my buddy invites me to shore fish with him he whoops me with a fly rod. Here’s one of a few Muskie caught last November

Not exactly sure. Fluorocarbon ~ 50 - 100 lb. test ~ 6 in. Gotta be short enough to work a fly. Pretty sure he ties all his own shit.

What kinda rod/line were u using? Looks nice BTW. What size/weight fly? We now have an established tiger muskey population here as well as several pike management lakes. I'm sure they're a bit more wiley than the alligators up north. I feel like up there u could throw anything and catch these motherfuckers. It's like brook trout fishing in Labrador or something. Around here u have to be a bit more cleaver.

Braided line ~ 60 lb. test. Pretty much the heaviest fly rod/reel one can get. Again he ties his own. That water is pretty stained though so the colors have to be bright. Where are you located may I ask?

I'm in CT the land where we dammed or polluted all our rivers to build this country back in the day. Don't disturb too much soil wading out here. We don't have deep lakes we only have little dinkers left by the melting of the last ice age. I've been thinking alot about braided but I still thing these things will cut thier teeth on it. Its one those things out here same as trout where the only thing that survives to get big has seen it all and is incredibly smart. Something like a dam where ur fishing is incredibly turbid so u absolutely must use something big flashy colorful or with some rattle for these snake bastards to find it. But they certainly lurk in the murk. That's honestly thier bread and butter.

Also I meant like fly line not leader. Like we're u using some kinda sink tip? Intermidiate? What weight? Did u have much trouble getting it to turn over or throw thru wind? Or were u using some type sink leader with heavy florotippet?

Ahh. Yes it’s a different ball game between the north and the south/east as Muskie are native here. I personally hate river fishing/fishing from shore now. Gimme a boat on a nice deep, clear lake and it’s like golfing 18 holes versus playing mini golf. We got skunked down in KY a few weeks ago and even a guide on the musky 360 podcast told us “Wisconsinites are spoiled with your lakes up there.”
Anyhow, i hear a lot of states are stocking tigers now and it’s starting to catch on so if you have a decent population finally I’d hit it hard. Definitely use braided line and a leader if targeting Muskie.

For the River late in the season he uses really light ones, they actually float if not pulled. That way he gets really long hang time...

The lakes here are privately stocked and managed for tiger musky by permit only and there seems to be a hell of alot of idiots out especially after covid. But I'm positive theres some real monsters out there. Pike it's like u go fish for them and ur not sure half the time if u caught a really small pike or really big pickerel until u get a close look.

Yeah most large streamers will do that until soaked in. It's just a big ball of feathers and feathers by design float and resist water

Welp when you hook into a decent sized Muskie, hell even a small Muskie you’ll know instantly. It’s like arm-wrestling versus a handshake. I’d also highly recommend a bait caster setup instead. The longer the cast, the more time they have to follow. Figure eights are a bitch.

Oh no. They tug and run plenty. It’s just real, actual muscle. Even with a pool stick for a rod and 80 lb test it’s incredible. I just did a bit of googling and you might have to head over to NY for the real deal, though...
