www.mushroomvideos.com is great. it says steam sterilize, boiling water produces steam so you only need a normal pot.
13qt PC is kinda small for grains, 23qts presto cost 70-80$.
edit lol that link was awesome, not info wise but as a blast from the past! dripshield!

A PC does sterilize using steam (moist heat) and pressure. They could be talking about just using steam (like a vegetable steamer), but without the pressure, you are not getting the moist heat into all areas of what you are sterilizing.

Wrong. Pressure allows us to raise the temp above boiling which achieves faster sterilization. I could sterilize grain via a pot and steaming but it would take 8-10 hours vs 120 min with a PC.

bahaha, thats so crazy!
and since you got a PC, might as well use it to sterilize your jars instead of steaming. you dont need a PC for PF Tek, but i would rather PC than steam my brf jars... which is what i do =p

From my understanding it's both the penetration of the steam and the reduction of the cooling effect of boiling. Anything not in contact with the steam is being sterilized via dry heat, which is much less efficient.
Then again, Im much more concerned with the fact that an autoclave/PC sterilizes effectively than I am with how it does its job. I could have messed up the facts on that when I was in school.

there is no dry heat inside the PC, we vent steam before adding the weight. PC'ing water simply raises its boiling point so both the water and the steam gets warmer than 100c/212F.
hotter steam = more effective steaming = less time needed.
