Enlightenment
    #2327691 - 02/12/04 06:15 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

This is a story about the time I became enlightened in the spring of 2003.  It starts way before that, and it has an unsatisfying ending.  Enlightenment is fleeting, but such is the nature of the beast.

When I graduated High School, I knew everything.  I graduated with a 3.6 gpa, was a board of regent scholar, wrote a very successful opinion column for the school newspaper, gave the graduation speech, and all that jazz.  I had been accepted to Engineering School, and the plan was to breeze through that and make the big bucks.  I had it all figured out, I had the world beat and I was going to make one hell of a dent.

Engineering School greeted me with an unexpected level of professionalism and elitism.  I had professors that had worked on nuclear weapons, sattelites, and all that jazz.  They were very proud of themselves and loved to rag on the school's liberal arts program.  I was taking composition classes to adopt an understanding of english.  I was taking calculus to "learn rigorous modes of thought."  I was in humanity classes so I knew how to think about contemporary issues.  Pure mind control.  Brain boxing.  Goodthinkful.

Fall semester passed with all of this accumulating.  Spring semester was worse, and one Friday evening, I drank heavily while listening to Dust in the Wind.

I close my eyes, only for a moment, and the moment's gone
All my dreams, pass before my eyes, a curiosity
Dust in the wind, all they are is dust in the wind.
Same old song, just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do, crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see

Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind

Don't hang on, nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky
It slips away, and all your money won't another minute buy.

Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind
Dust in the wind, everything is dust in the wind.

I decided to go for a night walk.  Staggering barefoot around the campus, my mind was wandering.  I stumbled to the ground.  For some hours I laid on a sidewalk, watching night clouds eclipt the full moon.  I became enlightened.

I never attended another class and I still carry that song around in my wallet.

So what are you planning to do for the rest of your life to make money now? Just curious...

As I said, the enlightenment passed, and I still needed money, so I think I will be an electrician.

I went thru a similar sort of thing, actually.

I was in college and going for a prestigious degree in Digital Design..

After a while..I said fuck that shit.

Now I'm a Truckdriver, and I LOVE My job. Nothing beats the freedom and thrill of doing your own thing out there by yourself on the road, as opposed to being stuck in some cooped up swanky office mindlessly pounding on a calculator with some asshole boss breathing down your neck under shitty flickering floursescent lighting and flies buzzing around and boring co-workers and whatnot...

I love truckdriving. Not to mention it pays good.

Good luck with your path to becoming a God of Electricity. Don't abuse your power. (Like Shroomism)

I thought it was a very satisfying ending

Enlightenment passed, eh? Perhaps, you just forgot again. Remember your source of happiness; its a memory. I'm sure if you flip your photobook you'll remember. Maybe it wasnt true enlightenment. I dont see how something like it could fade because it really isnt something you have to try to hold on to...it was always there you just have to remember it.

Perhaps, I am completely wrong and if you could better explain why exactly you "lost" your " enlightenment"?

my wick will burn out.
But, the fire of my mind
shall beam into infinite.
