NZ ID request - Chlorophyllum brunneum?
    #23275223 - 05/26/16 08:39 PM (7 years, 9 months ago)

I found a large number of mushrooms that I thought initially were an Amanita species, but I'm now leaning towards C. brunneum or something like that. Let me know what you think.

Sorry for the crappy pictures of the mature mushroom. I can go and take more photos if needed.

Habitat:
I found these growing from the soil of a lawn, and also from a very nearby bed of woodchips. The fact I found them in both initially made me think they're mycorrhizal

Gills:
Creamy white, free. I can't see any hints of green, like C. molybdites

Stem:
Very bulbous towards the base, but I couldn't find any proper volva. Very slight scales / discolourations on the stipe.

Cap:
Cracked with scales, progressing with maturity. The mature specimen has a very large cap, maybe 15 cm across, while the immature ones are a few cm across. Immature caps are globose, mature specimens are deeply depressed (I initially thought the mature specimen was two mushrooms side-by-side.)

Spore print color:
I didn't grab a mushroom to keep, but I can get this if needed. I understand it's a key feature for distinguishing between C. molybdites

Bruising:
The mature specimen showed some reddish-brownish staining in damaged parts of the gills.

Other information:
Regular odor

There are several very closely aligned Shaggy 'Chlorophyllum' in Autralia and New Zealand and many eat them without concern but occasionally people have severe reactions.
There is a paper on this taxon available online.

Thanks a lot for the info, Zen Peddler. You've been very useful in helping me figure out my NZ edibles :bow2: I guess what I'd really like to know is 1) if they're definitely Chlorophyllum rather than a volva-less Amanita, and 2) whether they're necessarily safe to eat if they don't print green (excluding the occasional "allergic" reaction that you mentioned.)

I've found and eaten Chlorophyllum rhacodes before, but they were significantly more delicate and smaller than these things, which are meaty and robust as hell. The rhacodes also didn't have such a strange puffball/egg juvenile stage. I'm always a bit spooked when I see that, because I know a lot of poisonous / lethal stuff can look almost identical to edible varieties at that stage of development.

This could be Chlorophyllum rhacodes, I don't see an abrupt basal bulb.

It is definitely Chlorophyllum.

Excellent, thanks a lot. Any comments on the edibility? If they don't print green, they're almost certainly good to eat, yeah? And even if they're not, I'm only going to wish I was dead rather than actually die, right?

That's great to know. Thanks Alan. I've previously eaten C. rhacodes without any ill effects, so I'll grab these guys and see what happens.
