Substrate Growth Question

Hello my fellow brother and sisters,
I have started my growth and used the monotub method and used coir/verm/gypsum as my substrate. My mixture I used was 1.5 substrate to 1 of colonized rye berries. I followed the pasteurizing techniques outlined by Frank's "How I Get Things Done" and I also dunked my grains for 20 minutes before mixing it all together. I did not case it and just mixed it all up since he stated that it just adds to a longer colonization time. Its been 2 days and I see that I might have some pinning action going on and I was just wondering if this was normal since I read somewhere that early pinning is a sign of contamination but when I opened the container I got nothing but a strong smell of mushrooms.
Just additional details, I only managed to get 2 inch deep sub, I was aiming for 3 but fell short in my guess and I did not want to pasteurize some more substrate so I felt like this could be adequate for a first grow.
Questions: Is this behavior normal within 2 days?
Will having a 2 inch sub affect the growth? Extra fanning and misting?
Suggestions?
Thank you,
Dopey

No, you don't have pins. The only problem I see with a shallow sub depth is that is going to lose humidity more quickly, so mist it if it looks dry and dial in your monotub accordingly.
Although cubes don't need a casing, they benefit from it. I'd add a casing layer if I were you once the sub is 100% colonized (left over CVG is fine) to help retain some moisture on the surface and to act as a nice platform for a better pinset.

What is a good depth for a casing layer once its 100 % colonized?
Also since your here, is there anything special that I have to do if I'm aiming for multiple flushes?
What are those straight lines in the picture called? Should have outlined them, they are in the lower center of the picture. They are vertical and that is why I assumed they were pins.
Thank you,
Dopey
EDIT:
After the sub is 100 % colonized and I add the casing do I put it in FC?

I am not all that familiar with inches but 1 cm depth is fine, you can eyeball it. Cover the sub till you can't see myc and then level it out.
You can get a few flushes from a monotub before contams rear their ugly head. Most people just trash the sub after the first or second flush to make space for a new mono. You can dunk the substrate between flushes, but your sub is shallow so you gotta be careful how you handle it, you can break it easily.
Take a look at this post, it's another way to dunk a monotub that might suit you well for this.
The straight lines you talk about is rhizomorphic mycelium (that's not a disease or something , look it up)

Perfect. One last question, once I covered the sub with casing, do I place it in FC or wait for a certain characteristic?

Wait a second, so this was not a monotub? And I was thinking all along that we were dealing with a monotub here Next time specify so that people can give you better advice.
So what am I seeing in the pic? A tray? What kinda FC do you have?

My apologies. I thought that FC stood for fruiting conditions. It is a mono tub. The picture shows the top of my mono tub.
