Moving to Thailand! * 1
    #23260102 - 05/22/16 11:32 PM (7 years, 10 months ago)

In November I'll be packing up and moving to Thailand for around1-2 years to teach English to kids. It pays really well and since I have a college degree (im only 21) I'll get paid even well-er. My lady friend just moved there in April to do the same and is loving it.

Has anyone ever been? Any advice or tips for being in a foreign country? (I've never left the United States)

Ey man! fucking awesome opportunity.

I don't have anything to add, but I'm really curious about this stuff. Care to enlighten me a bit on how the whole process works?

Yes, I spent a few months in Thailand and enjoyed the hell out of it. Friendly people, cheap and delicious food/beer, beautiful scenery. I've also been to a hell of a lot of foreign countries for my age.

My tips are these:

1) DO NOT get caught with drugs in Thailand. (Do not try to smuggle them in either, obviously)
2) Know the local laws, which areas are dangerous and when, read up on cons that people are playing. You're a foreigner in a new country! I'd bet my balls someone will try to con you in your two years.
3) Use a VPN, only use a VPN when using sites like the shroomery.

Avoid standing out, blend in with your local environment immediately upon arriving, it makes you less of a target. Not saying you should do anything drastic, but blending in (even with the more experienced expat crowd) will drop your perceived susceptibility by an order of magnitude.

Convert however much money you're taking with you in your home country, not upon arriving.

Learn to read and write Siamese at the same time, it will make learning the language easier.

IDK where you're going to be living in Thailand, but Bangkok is way more expensive than some of the smaller cities.

I have a friend who lives in the Philipines.

He loves it surfs all the time.

False reality gave some great advice. Dont get caught with illegal drugs!!! They are real strick about that there.

Also, poor countries typically have thieves so hide your money and goods well.

Get some good medical insurance there in case u get some weird illness there.

And send back pics for us!

thailand has a fixed exchange rate nation wide of around 2 baht per dollar and
it's cheaper to exchange money in thailand at a bank or even the airport than it
is in the US. it's good to use plastic of some sort if the bank you use does
reimbursement on foreign withdrawals on ATMs

My bank does not charge a foreign exchange fee. Free is less than 2 baht per dollar, no?

That's over 5% btw, Convert 20k USD, and you lose 1k in fees alone.

You can walk into any pharmacy in the tourist towns and they will sell you valium, xanax, whatever. Its fairly cheap too. The redbull or M50 drinks are good. 7-11s are everywhere. Don't drink the tap water. Some tap water is OK to drink, but most of it not. The locals know, but err on the side of caution. The beer is goddamn terrible. Watch out for knock off liquor. Usually they will have the same shape as name brands, but will have slightly off names. They don't sell alcohol before 9am, and not between 2-5pm or something like that. In the south of Thailand is mostly Muslim and there are lots of places that don't sell alcohol at all.

They barter for things lots. Usually whatever price they start off with, you can counter with "That's the price for 2?" and then wiggle around a bit, but usually they try to mark it up at least 100%.

Have lots of fun. Clothes are cheap there so don't pack too much. You can buy a cheap cell phone for like 20 bucks and get minutes at any 7-11. Minutes and data is dirt fucking cheap. Like 2 or 3 dollars will last you for weeks. Catch a muy thai match while you are there.

I'd say take like $300 in baht so you have enough for cabs and shit when you get there, but only withdraw as much as you can afford to lose at any time. ATMs work great at the banks. Pick pockets are more common there. Keep lots of small bills to buy food and stuff with as many vendors won't break large bills, or will try to short change you.

Also there are two major international airports in Bangkok which can be confusing as shit. You have to go see Soi Cowboy, the redlight district in Bangkok. It's something else. 20 or 30 strippers on the floor at a time. Crazy shit.

Take a photocopy of your passport. Get travel insurance. Thai people love whiskey, but thai whiskey tastes like shit.

The Bangkok zoo was pretty cool too.

They have lots of tourist traps where you can get your photo taken with tigers, but they drug the shit out of the animals. Its really sad actually. The whole country is a damn tourist trap, watch out for scams as they are everywhere. The dude with the lizard or monkey, and then he takes a picture, and he wants $10 for the picture or someshit. Or prostitutes picking up drunk tourists. Lots of people are running scams. Or the taxi driver takes you on the long ride and takes you to stop at the suit tailor. Just walk away from shit like that. Don't pay them.
