cactus question

I have recently developed an interest in succulents so I went and bought a few at the local nursery. There is one type of cactus that I see everywhere, but dont know what it is. Its some cactus stalk, with a bright ball grafted on top. These bright balls are either red, yellow, or orange usually and have little balls on them? What are these. Also, are there any species that one could recommend buying or cultivating that look interesting? Thanks

is this cactus the one you have? i can?t remember, or find, the species name at the moment, but it is a commmon cactus.

i came across this quote about that cactus. i think it is a bunch of b.s. though, except for the not being a flower part. someone please let me know if this info is true.

Euphorbia leucodendron is a nice one to grow. you could probably find pics of it using google.

edit: yes, those are two different cacti grafted together.

You're right, those are just a cactus grafted onto another. We sold a bunch of those at the greenhouse where I worked, but I'm not sure where the red cactus on top came from.

Yeah that was the cactus I was talking about. And I definitely need to find some of those cacti pictured in the bottom of the post.  :laugh:

i was always under the impression that they where crested cereus peruvianus

but where i got that idea i have no idea

I think it's a Gymnocalycium, possibly G. mihanovichii.

There's at least one Gymnocalycium that contains mescaline, G. gibbosum. They look a bit like peyotes but have big thick spines. I've had some growing for a few years but never sampled, and I haven't been able to find any info on the net about whether they contain enough M to be psychoactive.

They call it a "moon cactus". Moon Cactus, Ruby Ball
Scientific Name: Gymnocalycium mihanovichii cv. 'Hibotan' Britton & Rose
Synonym: Echinocactus mihanovichii
Family: Cactaceae
"The top of this cactus is not a fruit or a flower, it is actually the Gymnocalycium. This variety developed in Japan does not have any chlorophyll, and depend for its nourishment on the other cactus on which it is grafted. This other cactus is generally a Hylocereus (as in the picture). Hylocereus are fairly cold sensitive, and somewhat short lived. If possible, it is a good idea to re-graft it on something tougher, like a Trichocereus."
