How do you mean this? Do you mean that each individual is responsible for his own suffering?

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

when we stress about things that don't involve hunger and shelter (in certain situations), we are causing it.  what I mean by this, is that in order to suffer, we must feel a certain situation is "wrong"  this idea of "wrong" is based on our personality.  our personality is comprised of our ego and our rational mind, and if we let them, the ego and the rational mind will determine how you react. they are constantly telling us what is what and will give us many reasons "why".  if we identify with our personality, then we are leaving ourselves open to negativity.  what I mean by identify is that we think our personalities is what we essentially are (see thread regarding "essence of you") that this is our true nature and since this is the case, we constantly need to defend it.

if we realize that we are not our personalies, then our ego can relax and enjoy the here and now. we are too caught up in right and wrong, and things should be a certain way and we label ourselves as such.  even if you go through the manifestations of anger and jealousy, you will be aware the you are only playing out your role that you have aceepted as your essential self.  yes stuff still needs to get done, but instead of making that agreement that this one idea represents your true nature, you will instead just peacfully witness what is going on around you.

"I'm republican, you're a democrat and therefore we don't agree." this causes suffering, even on levels of anxiety and worry.  again this is all dependant on how we VIEW ourselves. when then spend energy defending why we think what way because we feel that this is what we truley are, instead of enjoying the here and now in peace.

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

What about if someone hits you on the back of the head with a shovel? Are you responsible for your own suffering then as well?

When the Jews were carted off, tortured and gassed, where they responsible for their own suffering? Where the people in Stalin's gulags responsible for their own suffering? After all, people were trying to create utopia in both these situations so they shouldn't have complained, right?

It's pretty hard to enjoy the here and now when some jack booted thugs are breaking down your door and carting your family away.

yes you bring up points about actual physical harm. but what kind of suffering is that really holds us away from each other. what would cause someone to hit you in the back of the head with a shovel? it might be because there is some negativity within that person emotionally. this is the type of suffering I was referring to. mr error of course was me not explaining myself fully.

when your tire gets a blowout, how iwll you react? you could throw a fit, but then that doesn't really SOLVE anything does it. you could think of all the reasons why the tire blowout was wrong, and in the end you sitll have a blown out tire. even if your initial react was damnit that f***in peace of s*** tire!! I hate you and I hope you burn in hell! you could think that for a minute, or an hour, depends on you.

it depends on say, how many blowouts you;ve had in the past, how your "felt" your day went.

i agree with what you posted, but a lot of that type of suffering isn't the main reason we don't have utopia. someone had to feel the NEED to WANT to hit you in the back of the head. that's based on their emotions and how much they identify with them.
