Old Aquarium as Fruiting Chamber
    #2326177 - 02/12/04 11:36 AM (13 years, 9 months ago)

Ok so I'm planning on using an old, once used, aquarium as a fruiting chamber. Just wanna check there will be no contamination issues with this, I will obviously clean the whole thing out etc but what other measures would be needed?

Also how much space is needed around each cake (PF TEK)? I want to try and get the maximum amount of cakes in this aquarium as possible without hindering growth

Thanks

heh, I didn't even tell you the dimensions
here they are tho...

24 inch by 12 inch and 17 inch high

I was thinking of making a simple shelf out of plexiglass (maybe with holes drilled in it to help air flow?) and standing it on legs so I can have 2 layers of cakes. How much room does an average cake require (sideways and upwards)?

1.75" - 2.5" horizontal
4" - 7" vertical, dont crowd the upward growth
if it look like you have packed to many in you prabably did. you want air to flow freely and you want to be able to get the dense CO2 off the bootom when you exhast.

A friend of mine puts his aquariums on their side reducing the chances of contams even more. Then he built a shelf for half of the aquarium. This allowed half to be used for actual fruiting, and the other half(the one with shelves) to be used for pre-fruiting. This may make it harder to use with perilite, however if you are here you can probably find a way. He made a plexiglass lid and used heavy duty duct tape to attach. But i'm sure you can figure out what will work for you.
