^ Rupert Sheldrake on Cannabis ^

-

To say No when Yes would be a piece of selflessness, but also to say No as little as possible. To depart from that to which No would be required again and again.

The rationale is that defense expenditures, be they never so small, lead to extraordinary impoverishment.

Our largest expenditures are our most frequent small ones. Warding off, not letting come close, is an expenditure. A strength squandered on negative objectives.

Merely through the constant need to ward off, one can become too weak any longer to defend oneself. (Ecce Homo, Nietzsche)

But does being stoned really "expand" one's mind, or dull and constrict it?

They say "astonishment" is the root of philosophy.  Therefore, a first time user who had been conditioned by his society, might, through cannabis use, have novel experiences with astonishment (that he might otherwise not have) and this sense of novelty and astonishment gets linked with expansion, and maybe it truly is. However, i can see how astonishment might become an addicting mechanical cycle, and so it is easy enough to see that there is a degradation of ones's character (person becomes too easily amused, simple-symbol minded, no interest in anticipating other peoples complex needs).

Cannabis appears to make me more content and astonished with what is immediately apparent, and the ordinary things can seem bigger than what they normally would.  i experience catharsis and laughter after smoking cannabis, but i find that only happens when I've been productive earlier in the day, doing something that contributes to the lives of others, or at least prevents them from being inconvenienced.

I started taking CBD oil I order through cannimed.  Every night I take a syringe shot orally and I find I sleep much better than I normally do.  Without some kind of medication, I don't have regular sleep, I'm up all night feeling high strung and erratic, and I sleep all day.

I haven't smoked herb in about 8 weeks.

According to Dr. Daniel Amen, THC is toxic to the brain, so I don't think I have any inclination left to get high by smoking. I'm now picky about what kind of herb I would smoke.  High THC might not be a good idea for me at this point.

I don't find the CBD oil makes me feel high, I just doze off to sleep easily and I wake up feeling pretty good.

As for my cognitive function and work performance, I don't have much confidence I can contribute much to society other than my music, art and web design, which I don't get too much support for, and yet, I enjoy it enough to keep doing it despite being largely ignored.

"When living on the bottom of the dominance hierarchy: money may prove of little use.  You won't know how to use it, because it is difficult to use money properly, particularly if you are unfamiliar with it.  Money will make you liable to the dangerous temptations of drugs and alcohol, which are much more rewarding if you have been deprived of pleasure for a long period.  Money will also make you a target of predators and psychopaths, who thrive on exploiting those who exist on the lower rungs of society.  The bottom of the dominance hierarchy is a terrible, dangerous place to be."  [Jordan Peterson, rules for life, pg. 16]

I find cannabis not so different from money itself.  Not having enough money is similar to having insufficient virtue/skill.  Many of us are in that situation, barely making ends meet, wracking our brains about how to get more of what is valuable (e.g, shelter from the storm, virtue, skill, control, love, good feeling, food, money, etc).

"Attention may last a second. That is good enough. Don't be greedy to have more. In the greed to have more, you have already created the centre, and then you are caught."

“If you wish,” said he, “to make Pythocles rich, do not add to his store of money, but subtract from his desires. …. There is, however, one point on which I would warn you, – not to consider that this statement applies only to riches; its value will be the same, no matter how you apply it. “If you wish to make Pythocles honourable, do not add to his honours, but subtract from his desires”; “if you wish Pythocles to have pleasure for ever, do not add to his pleasures, but subtract from his desires”; (Seneca, XXI, 7-8)

C. G. Jung (CW 14, par. 709): "In general, meditation and contemplation have a bad reputation in the West. They are regarded as a particularly reprehensible form of idleness or as pathological narcissism. No one has time for self-knowledge or believes that it could serve any sensible purpose. Also, one knows in advance that it is not worth the trouble to know oneself, for any fool can know what he is. We believe exclusively in doing and do not ask about the doer, who is judged only by achievements that have collective value. The general public seems to have taken cognizance of the existence of the unconscious psyche more than the so-called experts, but still nobody has drawn any conclusions from the fact that Western man confronts himself as a stranger and that self-knowledge is one of the most difficult and exacting of the arts."

I have a few friends who ridicule any form of introspection. BTW - I saw a show recently where several people ridiculed the ideas of self-compassion and self-love (kindness towards oneself). I found some irony in that. Maybe irony is not the right word, but I bet you know what I mean.

People are often looking for excuses that justify the continuation of their habits (the habit of ridiculing, defrauding, and putting people down might be hard to break).
