Problems reusing perlite!!!!!!
    #2325832 - 02/12/04 05:17 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Well lets not make this story and longer and more drawn out then it needs to be.......................

I am really poor right now, in fact I cant even buy perlite, and I am the kind of person that like to reuse things anyway so I figured I would rsuse my perlite.

So for about 2 days the perlite soaked in water , hydrogen peroxide, ISO-alcohol, and bleach, then I tried to rinse it clean and start anew.

Well after pretty much trying to risnse it for days I gave up, now I dont know what exactly happened but I cant get the smell of bleach out, this I assume is not desirable.

My friend said, "if you wipe the counters with bleach they smell like bleach, so just throw the perlite back in" , which I think would be stupid as the cakes would be getting water and there would be some bleach in it, even though the ammount is small.

So what happened ??????, is the bleach still in there???, does the perlite just smell????? like that??????? am I a dumbass for A. mixing 3 chemicals when I only needed one???

and B. for letting it soak for so long??????

I have had some cakes underwater for almost 35 hours, could they stay there until friday when a friend can lend me money for fresh perlite?????

(yes I am back to cakes right now , I had one casing contam and that fucked up my whole "shroom train", now I am waiting on some popcorn )

Dont worry about the bleach smell, it will go.
It wont affect anything but the fruiting chamber smell,

Using alchol wasnt a good idea though, as when mixed with water it goes milky and sticky.

Next time just use bleach.

Or just cook the perlite in water for 1 hour, strain, let cool down, use.

Cool, I wasn't sure it could withstand that much heat, but if it can, I'll just boil it next time then.

last i looked perlite was made from volcanic pumice... i assure you it can withstand more heat than the 212 degrees water throws at it. could probably bake it on broil for hours with no ill effects.

Yes, you are.

Your also extremely lucky you didn't add household cleaning products containing ammonia to the bleach or else you'd be a dead dumbass.  :nonono:

"Your also extremely lucky you didn't add household cleaning products containing ammonia to the bleach or else you'd be a dead dumbass." That's an old wive's tale. Yes, mixing ammonia and bleach produces deadly gasses... but unless you are dumb enough to stick your face over this smoking mixture and huff the fumes for several minutes you will be fine.

So your basically saying that Chlorine Gas(CI2), Nitrogen trichloride (NCl3, a very volatile explosive) and Hydrazine (N2H4, a component of rocket fuel) are good things to mess with in your home so long as you don't "huff the fumes"???

this is true, i've done it.

BTW, i used to mist perlite with a bleach solution daily. of course, my cakes weren't in contact with the perlite either. they were suspended ~.5in above the perlite using white plastic coated grid-type shelving (available at any hardware store like lowe's home depot) cut to fit the dimensions of the bin.

Yeah that's exactly what I'm saying... lets all go mix up volatile chemicals in closed rooms and fill our homes up with toxic gasses. What I am saying is that just because you mix ammonia and bleach doesn't mean that you should flee your home in fear of death, just open the window and you will be fine. You make it sound like when ammonia hits bleach its going to be like a Nazi mustard gas attack and anyone not wearing a lvl 5 respirator is going to be horribly scarred and/or slain.

i had an uncle who made a mistake working at a wal-mart type store. he was stocking some chemicals while on a ladder. he dropped something which caused a chain reaction of chemicals falling and bursting on the floor. at some point ammonia and bleach mixed and he was killed while several customers were hospitalied with severe lung damage. (this was the same uncle who screwed his lungs real good by burning poison ivy out of his fence row)

there are two lessons learned here:

1) Survival of the fittest/Darwinism is REAL

2) There is a clear and present danger in combining these 2 chemicals. While the danger is not so great with small quantities and proper ventilation, it is still a very intelligent practice to consciously avoid mixing these two chemicals. Quite simply; better safe than sorry.
