Quicksilver Messenger Service is, quite simply put, The Fucking Bomb!

I had all of their albums on vinyl, and then I bought them all on CD as they became available! I don't know if I can narrow it to a favorite song, per se, but I can tell you, that my two favorite albums are the first, self-titled, one, and "Happy Trails." They are both excellent mixes with LSD!

However, all of their shit, through the '60s and early '70s is great! I had a lot of happy trips to their stuff. I knew people who actually saw them play in San Francisco in the sixties. John Cipollina is truly a guitar god, and Nicky Hopkins was an excellent piano player who also played on many Rolling Stones albums.

PS: I seriously doubt that anyone in OTD is old enough to know who they are, so I'm going to move this thread to The Pub, where the average age is 63, and accordingly, things seem to move slower, so this important thread will probably be seen!

Heh, thanks for the help with the thread placement papaver. I am far too young to know who QMS is too, actually! But, still, I must agree that their first album is the best, and must also agree that it mixes very very well with psychedelic drugs!

BTW, I just found a show hidden in the "my music" folder in windoze--

My favorate song is The Fool from their second album, which mostly had a black cover and silver leterring with their m name int he center..

Many do not know that their real first album was a soundtrack for a documentary on Haight-Ashbury called Revolution. It was about a girl named Today who lived and roamed the Haight (I accidently wrote Sunshine, another nortorious haight-Ashbury street girl).

The album introduced three bands at the time in 1967. Steve Miller, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Mother Earth. Steve MIller played guitar and harmonica buit did not sing in three songs, Mother Earth played two songs and Quicksilver did two songs on that album, one was "Babe I'm Gonna Leave you" and the other was "Codeine", a song originally recorded by Buffy St. Marie.

But the black albunm, considered their first, had the song The Fool. That is my favorate.

Then I love Mona and Who Do you Love from the Happy Trails ALbum and I loved Shady Grove with Nicky Hopkins playing the Piano.

The late John Cippolina use to live in Eugene Oregon when I lived their in the late 1970s and early 1980s, I met him on several ocasisions. He actually made a few recordings with some Seattle street musicians while in Eugene. He even played on the street with them a few tiomes. They were my first favorate acid group when I lived in Haight-Ashbury. Saw them althogether more than 2 dozen times in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

I am glad someone else remembers them.

mj

I have all their music on cassette.

I love Quicksilver and also have all their vinyl....but nothing on tape or cd which is sad!

Pappy is right John Cipolina is one of the all time great's and Nicky Hoplins also played Piano with The Jerry Garcia Band for about a year and a half.

I had the Honor of seeing Jerry play with Nicky, John Kahn and Ron Tutt in 1975 at Queens College, (Colden Aud)!!!!!

"Edward the Mad Shirt Grinder"

Didn't Hopkins play a similar or same song on a Stones album years later?

The first albuim after their movie debut in the fil Revolution. This is the one with Pride of Man and the great guitar solo song The Fool.

This is from John Cippolina's own mouth:

"We shared the bill with so many different people; everyone from Howling Wolf to the Doors - but we got more money than any of them, even though we hadn't got an album out or anything. So we stayed around ... never did too much travelling, except up and down the state."

Whilst their manager, Ron Polte, was assessing the various record company offers, sending them back with clauses amended in red ink and making outrageous demands, he negotiated a one-off deal with United Artists, which involved Quicksilver's appearance in a film called 'Revolution', a pot-boiler about 'the underground', and their contributing two tracks to the soundtrack album.

"I've never seen the film, says Cipollina. I missed it when it came to town, but maybe it'll come on television someday ... doubt it though - it wasn't too hot from what I hear. Anyway, the band was a 5 piece in the film, but by the time we came to cut the two songs for the album, Jim Murray had left and we were down to four. So if you can find somewhere where 'Revolution' is playing, you'll see us as we were back in that summer of '67 ... some summer."

Quicksilver do two tracks on the album; Buffy Sainte Marie's 'Codine' and their adaptation of the old folker 'Babe I'm gonna leave you' ... both superb. Sad but true, the album is now deleted but if you come across a copy, grab it fast, because it constitutes an essential fragment of the San Francisco jigsaw."

Tried to find that album today when i went out. Got a few people looking for it for me. Use to own it in the1970s, I saw the doors concert he was referring to.

They also saw a black kid get shot right in his head int he Fillmore when they li9ved in the Haight.

Here is happy Trails

The cover I wanted to see as the front and back of the Revolution Album.

Anyway here is the front cover of the Shady Grove Album cover. And the inside of the album.
