Think you have cobweb? STOP. 6

Every.. single... day.. multiple times a day, someone wants to know if something is cobweb. It's NEVER cobweb. I've seen somebody post cobweb like twice in 5 years. All instances of the word cobweb need to be eliminated so that people stop getting this crazy idea that cobweb is the #1 most common contam. If I had a nickel every time someone thought rhizomorphic spider-like mycelium was cobweb I would be able to retire with a yacht full of naked bitches.
I don't know where this is all coming from but let's establish something now: You don't have cobweb. Even if you do have cobweb, you don't really.
Let's look at a picture and some facts.
This is cobweb mold. (Dactyllium) Notice it's gray. Notice the structure of the hyphae. Very fuzzy, very voluminous. No, your mycelium that actually looks like spider web is not cobweb mold. Cobweb mold does not look like a cobweb in most cases. No, anything remotely gray is not cobweb mold.
-Bacteria is the #1 most common contam type, start worrying about learning to spot that instead.
-Cobweb mold can grow to roughly 10-1000x its size within about 24 hours. It grows FAST. You won't have time to see it start, one day you'll have a huge swath of cobweb suddenly.
-Cobweb is the only contaminant you can do anything about, so worrying about it is a little pointless.
So, let's find out if you have cobweb. Hit your suspected cobweb with a spritz of hydrogen peroxide. Did it die? Then it was cobweb. But now you don't have cobweb. So even if you did have cobweb, it was stupid to worry about because it takes like 5 seconds to not have cobweb.
I propose we all refer to it as Dactylium so that nobody draws these ridiculous conclusions. Granted, undoing the last 15 years of internet is pretty much impossible, so it might be a lost cause. I guess every noob for the next 50 years is going to think they have cobweb, and overlay, and they'll keep hygrometers in their SGFCs.
Even 98% of the google image results for cobweb mold are not actual cobweb mold. People thinking they have cobweb mold unnecessarily has caused people to THINK THEY HAVE COBWEB MOLD UNNECESSARILY. You are furthering a cycle of destruction by completely ruining actual search results for cobweb by posting pictures that aren't cobweb associated with the text "cobweb mold".
So I'll say once more. STOP.

Ive never had cobweb. I always wanted it so I could fight it with peroxide. I hate mold... it would feel good to be able to kick its ass for once

I rarely see pics of it on substrates, so here's it on hpoo. Doubt it's real cobweb/dactylium though, just one of the many lookalikes. This was taken 24 hours afrer initial spotting.
Oh and when I saw it was you inoc who made this, it made me lol

Yeah that's definitely not actual cobweb but it is a white mold for sure... bleh. Fuck white molds in general.

Good thread. I have probably run at least 500+ substrates. I have only seen Dactylium once, it was on the third flush, and most importantly it was in a situation where the CO2 went really high due to something I was testing and not a traditional run at all.
500+ substrates. Dactyllium once.

When I was doing lots of BRF cakes I often got a growth that looked identical to inocuoles pic, fuzzy gray, although the growth was way less extensive and mostly only occurred on the bottom of the cake where it sat on a piece of foil.
In other words it only happened where it was very damp and there was no air exchange. If I flipped the cakes over and fanned them a bit more it would disappear. It never seemed to interfere with the grow. If this wasn't cobweb, any ideas on what it was?

Kill it and start over or let it grow and see what happens. The choice is yours.

I'm not convinced that the cakes are sitting on a substrate in that pic. . . More like some white plastic or something.

Pin molds ain't exactly common either. They grow a bit slower than cobweb, cobweb is like the sub looks fine and 8 hours later is half covered. Pin molds take a few days to get that much growth. If you leave em long enough ya get the little balls on the ends (spores). I have had pin molds twice, both times on cased grain.

Whatever growth I had, it was easy enough to stop. It only happened when there was stagnant air and lots of moisture -under the cake- or- on top of the cake- if there was a bit of standing water.
Looking back on it-I'm sure I was noobishly overmisting the cakes.

Would pin mold and cobweb both start growing up into the plenum of a sealed bag above the substrate or is that something to distinguish them by?
