Just picked up some Silica sand in cat litter form, I couldn't find silica gel, will it be as effective in drying?

I don't think so, I doubt very much that it is a very strong dessicant if a cat has to stick its posterior (how quaint) in it

Reportedly yes. Always pre-dry the mushrooms with a fan for 24 hours before end drying with desiccant.

yeah, i've hooked up a computer fan. If I leave it there any longer will it dry MORE or is that just all the fan can do?

>If I leave it there any longer will it dry MORE Sure. The key is to find a good ratio between pre drying is sufficiently so your desiccant isn't exhausted immediately, and exposing them to oxygen for a long time. I don?t dry them longer than 2 days with a fan, usually 1 day is enough(depends on the air relative humidity which varies)

I have found that I am able to dry mushrooms to a cracker dry state with a computer fan at room temperature, within a few days.
Is there any reason to use dessicant in combination with less fan drying, or is this fan drying not a problem? rh in the room is quite low, which I think is contributing to the fan working so well

yeah if you RH in the place you live is like beloew 40% you should be alrgith with a str8 fran, but the Silica ghel catt litter works pretty well imo
