Being a pro sport referee during the playoffs
    #23173528 - 04/30/16 05:55 PM (7 years, 11 months ago)

These people man... It takes a special set of balls to do that job. Its an intense and thankless job. I could easily believe a referee if he mentioned in an interview that he recieves death threats.

- A good call: Minor cheers. More of a "you've done your job right, woopti fucking doo.

- A missed call : Bitching from every player, a shitstorm from the coach and a pure alcohol fueled hate from the crowd.

- A bad call at a home game: Bitching from every player, a shitstorm from the coach and a pure alcohol fueled hate from the crowd. Plus insults

- Goal resulting from bad call: People want to kill you.

If you had the skills to do it, would you be a pro sport referee?

No.  I have rabbit ears.  I wouldn't be afraid for my safety but I would want to kill people

Yes

It's a good job

I'm terrible at it though

It takes mad skill

There's been very little real violence against refs. Talk is cheap.

I'd be more afraid to be a QB who throws stupid ass picks like Matt Ryan.

Refs get bitched at no matter what they call.

There are people who just like to bitch regardless of what's actually going on.

Refereeing takes a lot of skill though. Positioning is a lot harder than it seems. They get paid pretty well and it's fun being that intimately involved with sports.

My grandpa was a highschool ref for decades. He got in a couple of fights but that was back in the day and in low level sports. In the pros you are so protected nothing will happen.

Yeah it would kind of suck. Like being an offensive line man in football; nobody pays attention until you fuck up.

And I don't know if replays made anything better. It's so weird they do it different in different sports. In football they put the hood over their head like its part of an execution process. In hockey they stand there and wait for a phone call from Toronto. I'm not sure which one is stupider. Just as long as they never start doing balls and strikes in baseball with a camera and computer.

Agreed I've done some ref stuff for middle school soccer and wrestling. It's definitely a lot tougher than it looks.

You aren't physically or mentally capable of killing someone.  Plus I'm pretty sure things like Alzheimer's and being a registered sex offender would disqualify you from being an official anyway.

Please post the registry information so everybody can be warned.  They will thank you.

Even underage twinks can kill.  I am far more dangerous than you.

I've never claimed to be dangerous, but based on the "gathering in the park with downsie gingers" picture you posted, you are not physically capable of doing anything to anyone over the age of 12.  That's why you prefer the really young ones.

Instant replay has helped all the sports though which is good IMO.
