I suggest some research. If you're going to grow them at least do the reading instead of expecting someone else to take the time so you don't have to.

Found the thread about how shitty grow kits are pretty funny buy mine was only 15 quid then bought syringe of spores from a company I think I found on here 15 quid aint alot of money for a first attempt whether it works or not ill learn a thing or two whilest reading on here learning why it went wrong plus learning the abbreviations which mean nothing at the minute to me haha

No, 30 quid is not a lot. But I spent less than 50 quid on everything (including PC) needed to make that kind of kit myself.
And I was making like 10 cakes a week for over a month, lost many to contamination, but it was a better and much cheaper way to learn the hobby.
Is not what you might have lost, is what you not gaining.
Plus, if you log what you're doing as you doing it, experienced growers will correct your mistakes as you're making them…

Yeah well Im sort of dipping my toe before investing in stuff I dont know about this grow bag all seems well at the moment already learnt alot about mushrooms than I did before but I definitely want a self sufficient type of set up my own spore syringes and im still not familier on the correct terminology but my own home made growing containers my mycelium has pretty much took over the bag now only two weeks in I just broke it all up and mixed about but theres that much mycelium that Its now still quite visible even after a good mixing

Sweating = Bacteria, it is not the worst that can happen, but migth reduce your yields.
It is hard to give you more feedback without more information, whats the casing made out of? Did you mix it all through the bag, because then it is not a casing, did you layer it on top?
How are you going to fruit it?

Its a contamination resistant polymer I mixed the lower layer first then put the casing level on the top fruiting well ive got some reading to do about the instructions say Open bag after mycelium have taken over the casing and place in humidity tent (comes with kit) with dampened perlite place in lower temp and indirect sunlight

I love how kit instructions are written by people who have never grown a mushroom before. It's like the perfect way to achieve plausible deniability. How did we know they were going to actually grow cubes with our kit? The instructions were written so that it would almost certainly fail. Damn the hardiness of cubes

Im liking the brf tek but a quick ebay of canning jars brought up some expensive foreign stuff the jars where about 5 quid but postage was 20 quid anyone point me toward a cheaper alternative? Also vermiculite is horticultural grade ok? Gonna get stocked up and do it properly once this bag inevitably fails

build a proper fruiting chamber and take a pic of the secret behind the alu foil. foilhas no use, and you dont want high humidity you want fresh air.

This was quite a pleasure to read, thanks everyone X'D
But honestly man if you have good mycelium after all of that you should take care of it. Move that tin foil thing into a fruiting chamber and make sure it gets some fresh air

Oh well, even though it is bacterial you may see a flush, so i wouldnt bin it just yet. I would however make sure to not make anything new near it, possibly throw it outside in a nice shady spot or in a garage or whatever..
Then while you wait for that premade stuff to hopefully flush, read here on shroomery, make sure to read the new teks, not stuff from 10 years ago, dates are important when searching for information.
Look up on PF TEK, SGFC, Monotub, CVG, agar. That will throw you in the right direction if you want to do it yourself.

you dont need a PC for pf-cakes, PCs are for grain jars and bulk growing.

this is the first thing that link says: Attention!

www.mushroomvideos.com is great. it says steam sterilize, boiling water produces steam so you only need a normal pot.
13qt PC is kinda small for grains, 23qts presto cost 70-80$.
edit lol that link was awesome, not info wise but as a blast from the past! dripshield!

A PC does sterilize using steam (moist heat) and pressure. They could be talking about just using steam (like a vegetable steamer), but without the pressure, you are not getting the moist heat into all areas of what you are sterilizing.

Wrong. Pressure allows us to raise the temp above boiling which achieves faster sterilization. I could sterilize grain via a pot and steaming but it would take 8-10 hours vs 120 min with a PC.

and since you got a PC, might as well use it to sterilize your jars instead of steaming. you dont need a PC for PF Tek, but i would rather PC than steam my brf jars... which is what i do =p

From my understanding it's both the penetration of the steam and the reduction of the cooling effect of boiling. Anything not in contact with the steam is being sterilized via dry heat, which is much less efficient.
Then again, Im much more concerned with the fact that an autoclave/PC sterilizes effectively than I am with how it does its job. I could have messed up the facts on that when I was in school.

there is no dry heat inside the PC, we vent steam before adding the weight. PC'ing water simply raises its boiling point so both the water and the steam gets warmer than 100c/212F.
hotter steam = more effective steaming = less time needed.

Lose that bag then dunk and roll that thing! Mushrooms will sprout from all sides

I don't think it's too late to roll it. Just get it wet so the verm will stick and dunk it in a bag of vermiculite. You'll get better results and your pins will poke through the verm no problem. The verm layer helps keep optimum humidity around your cake and prevents overlay in my expierience so far. Mist it when it starts to look dry.

should've left the bag on, you'd dry it out real fast with all sides exposed like that and most mushrooms wouldn't get to mature.
if you just focus on growing them from the top you can get just as much weight (if not even more) and way less work misting.

larger surface area != larger yield amount
just like smaller surface area != smaller yield amount
i mean, it needs enough surface area to fruit properly.. you cant give it a dime sized space to fruit in for that bag and expect the same yield, but you get what i mean. thats why fruiting out of the top of jars doesnt make the yield less than it wouldve been otherwise. As long as correct conditions are given for either way.
but space makes a good point, that it will dry out quicker. i guess you can mist or bottom water it, though.

Second flush well under way some green and orangey yellow on the cake is it anything to worry about? Most of the green bits are where I twisted off the last mushrooms, some of the pins look black in the picture but its just the poor lighting they're all normal colour

all i can see is bruising, except for those black pins like you said. but also looks kinda strange in second and third pic, where it looks almost black on the sub itself.

Keep it moist but it's not going to pin in that spot. There is no platform for it to support pins.

spacechildo said: should've left the bag on, you'd dry it out real fast with all sides exposed like that and most mushrooms wouldn't get to mature.
if you just focus on growing them from the top you can get just as much weight (if not even more) and way less work misting.
He should have just followed the instructions apart from the humidity "tent". Ive just done one of these kits and I`m on my 4th flush by doing nothing different to the instructions, although I did make a proper shotgun f/chamber. I just poured in half pint of water inside the bag for half hour after each flush. Does it not look now like its over misted and the pins are dark and glossy? As someone stated, is it not gonna struggle to hold moisture now as its just a straight bag of rye, minus the bag? (These answers will help me too)

if the instructions said that just throw them away, you're also overmisting your mushrooms, that's why they abort.

I wouldn't case anything that's been in fruiting this long..
I still dont get why he took exposed all sides of the cake, hope you'll find a way to keep the cake glistening without drenching the fruits.
are you following the proper ways to build and use the sgfc OP? https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/20195542#20195542
should have pretty decent fae, I dont quite see how you have the time to mist so often that the mush abort in a properly functioning sgfc..

But is that a bag or plastic wrapped around the cake?
If so you should remove it before you do the 2nd flush...
Everyone said remove it by the time I read your post I'd had already removed it
The sgfc is exact 2x2 grid holes 1/4" 5inch damp perlite suspended in my daughters old crib stand so way off the ground
I have been misting too heavily not too often each time I mist I've been going over board less a mist more a drench I have now reduced to a MIST the clue is in the name my bad Never mind all learning for me

maybe you simply dont hit the 1 side of the cake that I commented on in your pic, but something weird is up since the top and mush are drenched but the 1 side was still able to dry out enough to form a mat somehow.

I was just reading about it don't know if I can be bothered with any more sterilizing tbh not for a while any way lol its a difficult conundrum to eat or not to eat that is the question? I do have about 8ml syringe of GT in my fridge so I'm not short of spores anyway

its' your choice. was just saying that its really easy to do, with little effort. and what do you mean sterilizing? you dont need to sterilize anything to take a print. well, except maybe flaming your knife or whatever if youre gonna cut it off wit hit. i do that, but honestly, they werent fruited in sterile conditions anyways, so it probably wouldnt be a big deal to just use scissors. but make sure to use gloves, and SAB at least. going from a print, its a good idea to use agar, anyways, also.

Agar can be easily made for pennies if you have a pressure cooker. $20 will get you started with no pour agar right off the bat. The value of a cheap PC cannot be overemphasized. It may seem like a big cost up front but seriously it will have been worth it after 2 grows.

nah you dont need to PC the foil. you can, if you want. i did once, but i dont anymore. i mean, think about it, the cap and spores themselves werent grown in sterile conditions.

No pour agar is a noob friendly method to do agar for cheap and without needing to order plates. It can be done with stuff you find in the supermarket. Here is the way I do it.

Just got the container out with my last what was cracker dry flush in it and the contents where a bit limber not soft but flexible can I redehydrate them they smell ok look ok? I have them in a vacuum sealed tub you have to equalize the the pressure before the lid will come off and there's a small bag of activated carbon in there as desiccant can't understand how they've started getting moist

wait.. what? youre saying you got some fruits to the point of being cracker dry, and then after being in a sealed container, with desiccant, they are no longer cracker dry? if they arent cracker dry, then yeah you will want to pt them back n the dehydrator..
my best guess would be that they didnt get completely cracker dry the first time, or that maybe one or two of the bigger one didnt get cracker dry, and then the moisture(sine being in a sealed container) got around to all of them. or something like that.
what did you use to dry them? and when you think they are done drying, take the biggest one, and try to snap it in half. if it doesnt immediately snap apart, and isnt super brittle, then they arent done.

i usually leave my smaller ones in for at least half a day, haha.

2% agar and 2% nutes is pretty standard. If yours is a pre-mixed thing you want 4% powder (4g mix pr 100mL water), its a good starting point at least.

Why quote that my last post said once its made i dont know what i need to do and I've been searching but all I find when search agar teks is how to make agar which I don't need now as it had been said, I need a tek on what you do after the agar is mixed p.c the mix pour in petri dish in still air box let cool in SAB drop in spore syringe or can I use my spore print and how? Then what after this? I'm not asking anyone to sit and type the answers just help me locate the tek to read through I've no idea what's what

Well, as a noob who has just inoculated this very same myco-bag, this thread has been a fascinating read! Thanks for starting it off mrmazdarx9!
Now just wondering if I should remove from the bag or not once I get full colonization? Earlier a member (Runningdog?) said he just followed the instructions to the letter and got good results so I might just follow them too (minus the foil wrap?)
Anyway, love the thread, some great tips for us noobs. Thanks!

What was the substrate again? Anyway I think the best thing you could do with it would be to spawn to bulk sub in a mini mono or something

Thanks very kind I would fruit in sgfc not the humidity tent (bag) the bag it all grows in I would trim down close to the level of the casing but not remove it as mine did indeed get dry on the sides if however you do want to remove from bag which is awkward as it folds into the substrate but if you do remove it dunk and roll in vermiculite to stop the drying. the subtrate is some type of grain pretty chunky aside from that I never really bothered to look into but the minimono sounds like an ideal plan
finally yeah everyone says dont buy a kit but these kits cost like £15 quid im on flush 4 now no contamination a big jar full of dry shrooms ready for some kick ass astral travelling ive learnt alot now learning agar got pf cakes on the go, all from these cheap good kits sparking my interest and getting me into this new world of microbiology

yeah it takes 3 months to be able to access the marketplace, for obvious reasons. but you can go the the AMU threads and post giveaways there, or they have a thread there for noob traders, also, until you can get into the marketplace.

i mean, idk.. i have given a few GT prints away to the US and UK, and i thin one to Canada... then a B+ giveaway of like 10 prints to the same three countries. but yeah, people would want them. some one would. especially for free =p
and it's a great way to get your trade ratings up a little for when you do want to d some trading. i mean, last time i was in the AMU trade thread, it was pretty dead though.. and has been still for a while.

hah basically all you do is, if you want the print that the previous poster is offering, you say "VVV with your print you are offering VVV" and then contact the person above you, for his print. then the nest person who wants your print youre offering will say "VVV...VVV" and contact you for your print to send to them, and so on.
but like i said, it's been dead for quite a while, so idk. i basically had to wait until i got into the marketplace, aside from a few freebies i gave out.

I know this is an old post so not sure if anyone will see this. I found it very interesting as I'm currently on my first grow using a mycofarm kit (I've already ordered the things I need to start a pf Tek soon) and I'm trying to work out what the best thing to do is as I've read opposite advice on this and other threads. I decided to bin the humidity tent and made a sgfc after reading a few threads and I'm waiting for pins, 6 days now since I removed from incubator and started flush stage, mrmazdarx9 I know you said you'd leave them in the bag if you did it again and cut it down low to the casing layer, but should I leave the foil on or remove? Runningdog79 did you leave the foil on, and did you just fill the bag with water in between flushes and then pour it out, and the casing layer didn't fall off? And when fanning and misting should I be spraying right onto the casing to keep it moist or just into the air and in the perlite? Thanks
