Fucking ticks!!

This morning i went for a drive with my dog... and about 2 miles from my flat there used to be a field , a big field. Today i noticed there some caravans in there... i drive in and check the place out. It is free... no reception no staff or toilets but a large field.
I was sooo happy. Finally i thought i found a camping spot near me. Right now the nearest good camping spot is 1 hour drive.
So, i talk to my neighbour about this and ask him is there any ticks in the field? I tell them theres long un mowened grass and he immediately tells me there ticks in the.
Fun ruined. I swear i got high in the morning when i found the field and now i felt like shit straight away
Fucks sake...

100% deet spray. Rub it everywhere on your skin. Everywhere. Coat the inside and outside of clothes, shoes, bags.
Been doing this for years and I hike in very thick tick infested locations. Haven't gotten bit by ticks or mosquitoes in years.

Ticks do suck. Pun totally intended. But.....with tweezers, you are cool. That's all you need. Yank a tick out within 24 hours of attachment, you're good. No probs. No Lyme. No nada. BUT....you have to yank him out RIGHT. that is, get right down on it with those tweezers and SLOWLY pull him out of you. You want his head to come out. Just get a good grip and slowly bring him out. Then slice him in half or something equally medieval.....

I've gotten better at getting them out of my cat if they are plump that makes it easier just grab and pull if they are dug in like on an ear or neck and your cat is freaking out like last time I just gave up. When your cat makes that low meow it's not a good thing you know the kind right before a fight. Anyway I put some of the monthly tick/flea stuff on it and it died and my cat let me pull it out. Fucking vet wants 50+ bucks just for a "visit".

Yeah that day I thought it was vet time and then I thought I could get him in the bigger carry cage no effing way. This cat I've had to load into huge boxes via tricks just to get him down to the vet. Yesterday I pulled a tick off his leg that was a tiny tick but engorging, not a painful spot like that other one was. Plus I could keep his head occupied while I grabbed that bitch with the tweezers. Put some of the tick/flea stuff on him and that lasts a month.

I used to have a big cup with water and a little dish soap in it (to break the surface tension so those fuckers would sink and drown) and would put all the ticks I pulled off my dog in there. There were times where I would easily pull 20 - 30 ticks off her after a couple hour hike. That cup had to have over a hundred at one point. The ticks are horrible in Southern IL in the spring, the one thing I do not miss about living there.

it's called an "office call" which includes a through exam, maybe a nail trim, and if they are due for vaccines those are given free or at low cost at the time of service. The tick removal would likely be free (it would be where I worked).
I dont think people realize veterinarians go though the same amount of school and their education costs just as much as human doctors. Yet they dont make near the amount of money human doctors do and they are treated crap. Hold your tongue.

What do you guys do to prevent tick bites? I recently got a lyme diagnosis. I'm not going to stop being out in the woods, but I Would like to minimize the chances of getting bit again though.

Ticks have never been a huge deal out here in cali just a gross nuisance. My buddy and I did a trip to this state park we hadn't been to before not long ago. All our tick bites bruised and hurt tremendously. Nickle and quarter sized red/blue rings that made us scared little shits and went to the hospital the next day. Totally fine lol!

we've got a shitload of ticks where I'm at right now. I've heard some people have special chickens that'll eat the ticks on their property. Otherwise I'm just always checking my legs for the annoying fuckers. We need to introduce more tick predators.

Yeah, I hear Lyme disease sucks big time.
Lots of people I know who had it don't have the physical energy to do the activities they enjoy anymore.
I had a Spanish teacher who had Lyme disease...she looked so tired all the time.

Ticks are gross!!! They are sneaky little bastards with a knack for going places where they shouldn't. I've even experienced, on several occasions, where ticks will go "airborne" and drop from the forest canopy; onto you!! My advice, wear bright fluorescent clothing. Bright colors help you notice when one of the buggers has hitched a ride on you. They are actually very easy to notice, if you occasionally scan your person. Wear long clothes (pants, socks, full-sleeve shirt, hat) and be sure to tuck each inside of the other. For example, tuck pants into socks and both inside of shoe/boot, shirt into pants, etc. Basically create a fabric suit.
Also, avoid travelling through tall foliage; includes bushes, trees, etc. If you must, travel with a sense of urgency. Don't stop for scenic photos or to pick the flowers. Ticks like stationary targets, it's how they attach to you in the first place. Plus, still targets are easy to land on from above! More importantly, check yourself often; when encountering the aforementioned environments. Ticks are 360' opportunists.
Sorry if i'm preaching to the choir. My sister got Lyme from a tick and she got very ill. Ticks should not be taken lightly. They will fuck your shit up.

Bishalon said: Yeah, it sucks. What I hate is that because we use flea and tick repellents for dogs, they don't actually attach to dogs. Ticks are hitchhikers. They enter our house on our dogs, and then attach themselves to me and the children. This is one of the reasons why we started spraying our yard. I once had a reaction to a tick, even though it had been on me for less than 24 hours, which required me to switch to steroids to fight - the spot behind my knee swelled up, turned purple, and itched horribly. Even 6 months after treatment, it still itched, even though I was on antihistamines. My husband had a similar reaction. We both tested the dog twice, and each time it was negative. The doctor said you hear a lot about ticks and Lyme disease, but ticks carry a lot of unpleasant things. He advised us to protect the dog and read the large selection of flea collars for dogs and it really helped.

With you on that one. One person said that as well and for someone who goes on long hikes and camps, I hate them. Stinging gnats as well and horsefly stings hurt as shit. Would rather take a hornets sting and once I had enough of them where my hand swelled up to a size I didn't believe possible, but didn't hurt all that much. Maybe the adrenaline of running from the swarm.
Am jibberjabbering. Year of Covid and no 25 days in nature and away from society and on the PCT. Last three years, section hiking. Good thing about high elevations, no mosquitos.
Had a few ticks once when young. Someone in the know just burned them out. Just the possible diseases I worry about with both. 3rd world countries, wow.
