Whelp. Though I haven't exactly been killing it lately, my rate of failure has been reduced quite a bit. Here's a mini-mono of Creepers. First flush after picking .5oz dry already.

At least these little fuckers pack a punch.

It's not so much that they're unnecessary or useless, it's that those cheapo models are useless because they're not accurate, making them unnecessary. But yeah, a properly built and maintained SGFC will work fine, so you don't really need a working hygrometer anyway.

unless your hygrometer can read the rH of the micro-climate of the cake's surface, then it is useless...

A fluctuating humidity is preferred and visual cues are a lot more effective than relying on a device that reads out an arbitrary number. You could have high humidity the whole time and have a shitty grow because you weren't paying attention to the things the substrate is telling you. Likewise most of us never use hygrometers and crank out ridiculous grows by learning how to read the substrate, because that's the only part that matters.
I've done several grows in open air with no fruiting chamber at all, like 20% humidity, and they turned out pretty okay because I misted them when they got dry and used a casing layer.

Mycelium overtook some contam but there was a little green left when it started pinning. I cut out the contam and these babies came out the hole.

That's both impressive and really... really bad. If you have a green contam and you're just letting it take back over repeatedly your future chances for success are plummeting.

Look at the cake behind the cluster dude.. you can see it...
The cluster is obscuring a terrible terrible secret. As magnificent as it is, it is but a facade.

I think you are totally right. You have to look at what the substrate tells you. And I try to do this, and try to act accordingly.
But... I still feel, as a rough estimate, even a cheap (calibrated) hygrometer is beneficial for a first time grower. You know, to get a feel for things...
Anyways, thanks for your compliments on my fat little babies!
