X-Acto Knife Blade

just wondering if anyone else notices their blade getting dull, and chipping little pieces away on it's surface from repeated torch sterilizing, or if it is just because mine is a cheap Walmart set. there are a few more fine blades in the set that i can use, including 2 that are the same as the one i am using now, but should i be buying some more blades online, eventually? Or do you guys use the same bade indefinitely? or do you all just not have this problem at all? at first, it didnt really chip off much or anything, but i have noticed that now it is fairly dull(also not a huge problem since agar is easy to cut) but a good amount of thin little metal pieces are chipping off of the flat parts of the blade(not the cutting edge).

I just went and bought new blades for the same reason....I kept finding pieces of my blade in my agar....I figure it was just a result of too many time being hit with a torch

Even my #11 blades, man. I notice they get progressively more dull each flame and cut. I try to keep around a dozen at all times. I'll use the same blade for a dozen or so plates/transfers.
I have a design background, and when using x-acto blades in design work, the correct protocol is to change blades each slice! In that case, paper is much more dulling than agar though.

A pack of blades are like $3.....I'll go buy new blades before I let them get as bad as my last one was.....it was pretty fuckin dull too! I like a good sharp blade with a good point...makes a huge difference IMO...

Ya I find that a fresh blade is easier to drop the agar transfer on the receiving plate than a dull one. They stay sharp if you don't get em orange hot and let them cool. I think I read that pasteywhyte cools his blade in the receiving dish then makes his transfers. I'm gonna give that a try next round.

You're supposed to get them orange hot... there's not a way to not do that and still be doing things correctly.

When I torch my blade covered in bits of agar the agar all burns off clean, sometimes a stray spark or 3 will come off of it. You use a torch tripdawg?
I'm fine with the normal amount of wear and tear a blade gets from heating it red hot every time you use it. Replacement blades aren't that expensive and you gotta consider they really aren't made for doing that. I don't know of any blades that are made for doing that long term. I think people have posted a few in the past but they still come with replaceable blades, since, otherwise that would make the base piece useless.

meh, yeah. blades arent that expensive.. i was just wondering.
ill buy a pack of 100 #11's to last me a while. i have 3 #11's left that ccame with my kit, along iwth like 9 other types. one of them is a curved blade, that is like a half circle, but not that round, and i use it to cut the caps ff my fruits when i print them. works really well.

I used my last blade for 1.5 years. it was twisted, brittle, and dull as fuck. still worked to take transfers, thou.

... But why? It doesn't really make a difference. Maybe they need some iron.

I was using a scalpel for a while, and it was too sharp for agar transfers, it kept dropping the piece, or slicing right through it. Going to switch to xacto next time around for convenience of blade availability. Glad to hear they dull out.

well... i like a sharp blade. doest fall off the end or anything like that, and doesnt cut through anywhere that i dont want it to cut through.

It takes getting used to. But, if you make a clean incision, and only stab your piece gingerly, it stays on just right. The sharp edge helps make a clean transfer to the receiving plate. Just takes a little practice.
I just find when I re-use the blade too long, my samples start looking more and more butchered.

When the blade gets too fucked up it'll start catching the mycelium and dragging it off of the agar, which can be okay for a transfer but can basically ruin an attempt at blender agar or the like.
