casing help
    #2315251 - 02/08/04 06:47 PM (20 years, 1 month ago)

I made a pie tin casing a week ago out of 2 mostly colonized cakes with the uncolonized portion removed. I made an accidental thin bottom layer of 50/50 +oyster shells + hydrated lime. about 1 1/2 inch substrate depth and a top layer about 1 inch. I accidentally patched too much covering the not too active mycelium pops. I later scraped that away and put it onto the more violent sprouts. My problem is the center of the casing is not colonizing and its been a week. everyhing around the center is looking strong and healthy but the center is not showing any signs of colonization. Any suggestions?

Sounds right, fee. Fruit that sucker.

lleave it alone. grow some more use straight verm next time. casings are a difficult portion of shroom growin. that takes much practice.

thanks a bunch, can someone tell me why air exchange is soo important and why alot of my mushrooms first flush do not give me a trip and the reason why mushies dont turn fat but end up turning skinny with small caps?

P. Cubensis just needs a lot of air exchange during fruiting (3 full exchanges an hour I believe is optimum) in order to sustain growth. As for them not working - it could very well be that you're not taking enough. Be sure to check out the dosage calculator here at the shroomery.

smaller mushrooms are almost always from inadequate water. i actually think you can get away with minimum fanning but make sure you use a 106 qt tub.

Get a dinner fork, put in boiling water for 5minutes. Use this (after it's cooled) to rough up the casing layer and stir the colonized parts in with the non colonized parts. This will cause a much better pinset. I definaly recommend deep scratching.

Three exchanges per hour? That sounds like overkill to me. I do three per day during fruiting. I have also left fruits for 2-3 days w/o any air exchage to no bad outcome.
