So ive just soaked 4 quarts of rye grass seed for 8 hours. How long should i let it dry before loading into the jars? Its been sitting 4 hours now in a strainer over a bucket. Also i was thinking of making a couple cakes and using rgs and a little verm to help keep it together. Will this work? Im going to try anyways probably.

Grass seed has a very high surface area. Takes me forever to get it dry.
Lately I have been using paper towel to absorb the bulk of the water after straining, then drying on cookie sheets until it stops clumping.
Can get messy, but the last 2 times this has stopped my overly wet jars.
PF Cake is a very solid Tek. You can grind any grains to make the flour component. Just keep the ratio

So is it supposed to be dry? I thought it was supposed to be moist. Or just to where it doesnt clump any more and pool water in the bottom of the jars?
And u answered a question without me asking i was curious about whether i should grind the rgs or just put some moist stuff in there. But i will grind some up. Thanks snazz

I used to load them slightly damp and bank on the kernel to absorb water during the PC cycle.
Ended up consistently with wet jars that are too nice of a habitat for contams. You can always mark test/control jars with different moisture levels and see how differently they play out.
Not sure how many people have had RGS wetness issues, but it was so common for me that I gave up on using it for 4 months. Best g2g master though. Expanded a half pint to 20 pints and a few quarts lol.
Best of luck!

yeah im not trying to build a nice habitat for contams lol. I think i will wait about 8 to 12 hours of drying. im currently steadily approaching 6 hours within the next 10 mins and the middle of the pile is wet for sure. go knock out the gorcery shopping for the week.

Paper towels work well to speed things up.
Fairly certain my 4x diluted coffee soak added to the stickiness, which compounded the issue a bit. Likely limits water absorption in PC.
Did you simmer the RGS at all? Been doing a shorter soak with simmer for testing too

No i didnt simmer. I rinsed under warm to luke warm water for like 15 mins over and over through the strainer till the water ran clear then put in a tote added some spent coffee grounds enpugh to make 1 pot and added boiling 6 qts water 2 qts coffee and stirred for 10 mins then stirred every hour for the first three then went to sleep woke up at the 8 hour point stirred again let sit for 10 and then strained and have been drying since.
And i agree 8 hrs is Hellas.

I soak mine for 24 hours and then simmer for 10 minutes. Strain in colander and leave for 15-30 minutes and load into jars for PC. I have never had to wait more than 30 minutes for my rye to dry. I leave it in the colander in the sink and mix it up with a spoon once or twice over the course of it drying.
