we have a black pin mold on most of our mycillia. could someone tell me how to get rid of it, and is it dangerous?

Just throw it out.
Not exactly healthy, and you won't be able to save your jars/casings.

so, no chance of saving it? is it deadly or anything if shrooms are grown from a cake that had it?

Norcal... the goal is to grow fungus... not mold. Most molds are not good for you. Does it smell good? Then it isn't.

Sorry,

Try again... good luck.

Listen to Maia... unless you have mistaken something else for pin mold, you are growing contamination.

I get what you are saying norcal_bois. No I do not think you can beat the black pin mold. A suggestion might be to make an outdoor garden if your current temps allow for it (rather than throwing out your contaminated cake/casing).

The faq probably has some good info on outdoor gardens with spent cakes/casings.

thanks. i think i will try the outdoor thing. it is still a little cold, but they should just lay dormant until the temps are right, right?

I have been getting both black and green molds, Sometimes I think I might try to salvage such and start surgically removing and seperating as much of the white mycelia and then drowning them in peroxide, the rest is then thrown out. I have yet to have any type of success with this method, time will tell. As far as little black 'pins' that don't amount to much, these will not grow and fruit very well and can be delt with as you see fit. They are harmeless and do contain some of the good stuff, the just don't get much farther than pinning and then turn black.Hope this helps and if I am wrong about any of this , I'm sure someone will correct my error.

I know it's hard to accept that once your cakes or casings become contaminated you have to throw them out and start over again, but there's just no way around it.

Any mold on your cakes = not good.

Asses your sterility... try to learn from your mistakes.

Yes, most probably but no one can ensure you this will work.

everyone on here seems so cool.  thanks guys.  any more suggestions, feel free.   i HATE the thought  of wasting my poor babies.  so i moved the stuff with the pin mold outside.  if it works, COOL!  if not, oh well, i have a 5 quart cake that is colonizing rather well.  i just hope to have no more problems, because im out of spores, and am completely nervouse about ordering any.  i got lucky when a friend said he had a kit he bought a few years ago.

First rule of mycology. Always save some spores.

Well... it isn't the first rule, but it should be.
