Do these BRF cakes look ready to come out of jars?
    #23184342 - 05/03/16 01:03 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

I am a horrible judge at this and since some are at around 50% and others look to be around 100% I can't decide.  I think my last growth was a semi-failure because I left the mycelium in the jars for FAR too long.  Obviously the last picture is not ready just a comparison as the were all inoculated the same time I find it strange some seemed to go so much faster?  Thanks peeps

They'll vary but a good rule of thumb is consolidate 5-7 days after 100% and fruit all at once, unless they start showing pins. Don't forget you can't see what's going on in the middle. You don't have foil or tape over holes right?

No these babies are breathing.  With that Vermiculite on top is it safe to just take the lids completely off?  I have the lids loosened and the holes on top are pretty large.  I used a dremel bit for the holes... Def bigger than the nail size in the PF tek.  And no incubation tub or fish tank heating element I gave up on all that mess... Keep it simple stupid.  KISS.  .. Just sitting next to the window with blinds closed.  They get plenty of fresh air and a little ambient sun.

There's a difference between gas exchange and fresh air exchange, and they both serve different purposes.
Gas exchange occurs through small holes in the lid to prevent a buildup of co2. Mycelium needs to breath, but a higher level of co2 is desirable for optimal colonization.
Lower levels of co2 with fresh air exchange is a pinning trigger.

No. The vermiculite acts as a filter but its not safe to take the lid off untill they are fully colonized or they will contaminate.
The lids shouldn't be loosened either but it shouldn't matter much. Just be c arefull not to disturb ths dry verm layer, if it gets knocked down into un colonized substrate it can introduce the contams its there to trap.

Until they are birthed they dont need fresh air exchange just gas exchange.
