questionable pedro
    #2319993 - 02/10/04 01:05 AM (13 years, 11 months ago)

Hi, my friend has 3 san pedros, all of a similar size and definitely the same species, except that they look quite different to my san pedros.

So.. my question is, are these san pedros, or some other trichocereus, or another genus entirely??
Thanks,
zeta

see the small areoles, and closer spaced than on pedros?
it's also of a darker green.
i am estimating the latter one has 4-5 ribs (on the top), this is typical of scopulicolas.
but if you they end up a little spiny they might also be juuls giant (pachanoi X peruvianus).
just my guess, i'm no expert.

Yeah.. that's what made me think it might not be a pedro
Interestingly Trout says.. " The Mature plants have 4-6 ribs; usually 5. Branches showing more than 5 ribs will normally lose a rib as they grow."

Trichocereus species will lose or gain ribs depending upon environmental conditions. I have spachianus, pachanoi, and peruvianus that have all exhibited this phenomenon.

i've always wondered what has an effect on the number of ribs.

i've gots some crazy trichs. they can't figure out how many ribs they want to have.

one crazy pedro has 8 ribs on the bottom 2 feet, then it branches and one shoot has 5 ribs, the other has 6. those shoots are about 8" long. they each have 2 new shoots growing from their tips. one has 2 six-ribbed pups, the other has 1 five-ribbed and one six-ribbed pup.
