AusMush said: Damn, I like all your advice I got a 5Quart (5litre) Salter PC coming soon it only gets up to 11psi ish tho , will this be a problem? And will I be able to fit at least 3 quart jars in there at a time? It says the diameter is 22cm and the height is not specified :/ really wanted a mirro 22q pc from Amazon but the import price was huge ..
Cancel that order. That's way too small for this hobby. You will have to run it longer than normal due to the lower psi it's capable of. Not worth it for the 1qt it will probably fit. 5qt liquid capacity won't fit 3 qt jars, probably not even 2.

Aus, best you can do is save for a bigger, more comfortable PC. A PC like that will kill you with problems. I have this small stainless steel PC which I couldn't find anywhere how much psi it achieves, probably because it was so old. Apart from literally flying blind about the pressure, it would only fit 1 quart. I used to try and fill oven bags with grain so I can fit like 2/3 quarts in it and then transfer that to jars, you can imagine how that worked out for me. Only worked once on 1 jar . Thankfully my presto was already on the way at that time.
The mirro is just about the same but if it's not too expensive, the presto is a bit better. I like having the pressure gauge. Not really a requirement but if you decide to run it at a slightly different pressure, you can set it up perfectly and safely with a presto. The presto starts releasing pressure when it is just about to reach 15psi so I would have to leave the burner on med heat. With a couple of coins attached to the weight it keeps 15psi and barely makes a sound.

Ssss.. owwww , too late probably , I would probably not mind if I had to use smaller jars , even having the option to pc my brf cakes would be helpful right now, I'll probably just buy another later on now that I have finally got myself legit employment :-)

edited my post above. Too bad, that PC will cause you nightmares. You would probably have to PC a quart of grain for 3 hours.

Didn't have to edit man no offence taken :-) I just rushed into buying it supposed having used a pot with a lid for so many months and having a steady 50/50 contam/success rate.

That was so I wouldn't double post . Yeah, I guess you can use it for PF cakes. Won't hold a shitload of jars but if you are using half pints you should at least fit a handful in there. Just remember to increase the PC time since it only gets 11psi. There was a chart somewhere of how much you should increase/decrease PC time with lower/higher psi than 15. I'll try searching for it.
You should try searching for sterilizers or small autoclaves in the meantime. I coulnd't find a PC big enough in europe and a few months after I bought the presto I saw this site where they sell sterilizers similiar to the AA. Electric and they had larger ones. They call them autoclaves here.

Keep in mind that this chart is actually for quarts and that there was no testing done. But at least you would have an idea of where to start. Good news is that with half pints, the heat would penetrate it faster so the times should be on the long side rather than too short.

Oh and also, by quarts he means quarts of grains. BRF requires less time so you should be able to follow that to a T and have perfectly sterile jars. You can then maybe start reducing a bit if you think you are going overkill.

Well you can but in the long run it won't be worth it. Assuming it's around the same size as the stainless one I own, you can only do 1 quart at a time and the PC time is going to be ridiculous. The time and gas you will end up wasting will be worth more than a new presto impored to your door. I feel you man, I paid over 200euro for my presto so I know how helpless you feel when you see the shipping rates. But what can we do?

I'm thinking 3 maybe. Pints aren't all that comfortable for grains though. When I was using tyvek all I wanted to use were ball style jars because of the 2pc lids. I got stoned once and said fuck it, went on and bought 48 jars. They turned out to be pints instead of quarts so when I recieved them you can imagine how pissed off I was. Like 200euro for a bunch of jars and they are the wrong fucking size. Anyway, I decided to use them still because the 2pc lids are awesome for tyvek but they got old pretty quick. They don't hold much grains due to not being able to fill them all the way. You would have to prep, pc, inoculate and wash 2-3x the jars per monotub with pints.
