My first pressure cooker
    #23198974 - 05/07/16 01:49 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

I have read past posts on this query and I still gotta ask... WHAT SIZE???

I read posts by fellow Canadians and the 22 quart at Canadian tire looks like the "pot of gold", but when I opened the box it was like a 35 inch tire off my jeep. That seems a little big for the burner on my stove (uneven heating), if that matters. I am going to grab a 22 and a 9 right now as I can get the sale price and return whatever I don't decide to keep.

I would like to grow bulk at some point but I am PF-ing for my first time and I just don't know if this cauldron is the ticket or if I should cool my jets and get some feedback from you guys. I suppose if I go bigger in the future I will want to get a large one but I'd like to hear from experience if you guys don't mind.

I highly reccomend the 22L, presto is 23 I dunno if that's what you mean. With pf tek you will use half pints or pints so it will seem big for you for now but a couple of grows using cakes and you will go running to bulk. With bulk we use quart jars mostly and a presto 23L holds like 10 jars max if they are not widemouth. 10 is just right IMO, plenty of spawn to make a couple of good sized monotubs but not too big and bulky. I would love one of those AA but a presto is good for my needs for the moment.

A smaller one will be uncomfortable once you get serious with mycology (if that's what you want that is). Besides, you can always fill a big PC less but you cannot fill a small one more than it can handle. If you can afford it, buy it.

As for the burner, my presto has this thick aluminium plate at the bottom which will distribute the heat pretty well. My biggest burner's flame is just as big as the PC on high heat but once the pressure is up I move it to the smallest. A PC is not like a pan, it won't pressure cook unevenly because the steam inside it will do the cooking.

You can put another 3 on top, on their side. If you are using wide mouth you can only fit 9 AFAIK. Never used wide mouths so I'm not sure.

How is this relevant? It sits on a stove. You're not gonna be carrying it around the house.....

Fack it boys, I got the 22 and the sale was for the smaller models only.

I felt that I could afford to try it on the stove to see if it fits before I commit and it is fine. I started a new culture of TC yesterday and the mystery strain from 4:20 is getting stronger.

I am eager to try bulk but I stopped myself after buying coir and WBS so I could further research agar, monotub designs, and finer updated teks before I go jumping in. After I read some stories I decided to cast a line in and see what bites, just keeping it simple with room to advance I guess.

JEEEEZUZ... this is a really big pot man!

Trust me, if it can fit on your stove it's not that big. Even my 41 quart sterilizer seems small to me now.

I think you have that backwards. The regular mouth jars are slightly taller than the wide mouth jars. So if there would be clearance issues it would be with 10 of the regular mouth jars.

You should leave the cooker on the same burner and just turn it down. Moving a pressure cooker while under pressure is not advisable.

I move my PC all the time while it's still moderately pressurized, I just wait until the dial moves below 5 psi and I move it to another room to cool down completely.
I don't have the luxury of leaving it on the stove, because the top of the pressure gauge blocks my microwave, and we all know how important having a functional microwave is in this day and age

I do this too, but I do let it cool a bit first. I have to move it to get it close to my SAB. The less time I'm carrying around the jars outside the PC or SAB before inoculation, the better I feel about it. Even though I'm going to be wiping them down and everything.

That's one thing. But he's moving it at full pressure. From one burner to another the chances of dropping the cooker are miniscule, but some noob might read that and think its ok to walk across the room with a PC at full pressure. That's all. It doesn't take a large jolt to get the jiggler weight to sputter while your carrying the thing and startle someone and cause them to drop it. A PC at 15-20 psi dropping to the floor at your feet probably won't end well.

I hate microwaves over the stove. Can't fit my 941 under those setups. Had difficulty fitting a 921 under a setup like that. But made it work.

Good point, I didn't read that part. It is always best to let the pressure drop first.
I always move my PC at a snails pace just to be on the safe side..can't be taking any risks.
My greatest fear is that the thing will just explode one of these days for no apparent reason.
It's irrational, but it is still in the back of my mind

Get an AA and you'll never have to worry about it blowing up. Camplo has run his modded AA up to 60psi I believe. And he's still around. LoL! These things are tested over 200psi.

Damn, I like all your advice I got a 5Quart (5litre) Salter PC coming soon it only gets up to 11psi ish tho , will this be a problem? And will I be able to fit at least 3 quart jars in there at a time? It says the diameter is 22cm and the height is not specified :/ really wanted a mirro 22q pc from Amazon but the import price was huge ..

Cancel that order. That's way too small for this hobby. You will have to run it longer than normal due to the lower psi it's capable of. Not worth it for the 1qt it will probably fit. 5qt liquid capacity won't fit 3 qt jars, probably not even 2.

The big burner is too strong even at low heat. It ain't really a big deal though, I barely have to move it a foot to put it on the other one. I do take it in front of the hood while it's at 15psi though, all it does is release a bit of steam, nothing dangerous. Kinda like a steam train

I can fit 10 jars if I play with the placement a little bit, maybe the ones I use aren't the same size as the Ball jars. I use 1pc lid jars manufactured in europe.
