should I put a casing layer if I spread out a thin layer of coir over the substrate?

well i did some experimenting and did Damon5050's coir tek and have two tubs fully colonized. I did as he said and saved the last bit of coir to put over the bulk substrate. now the top layer of coir is colonized and Im not sure whether or not to put a thin layer of sterilized vermiculite moistened to field capacity. please fill me in with any personal experience or knowledge. thanks

It's totally optional.
I would just fruit it.

right on. so with the layer of coir spread over the top of the bulk substrate, is it doing the same thing that a layer of verm would do? I guess that was the better question to ask. It just seems as if they both are a type casing layer if i understand correctly

If you applied the layer of coir at the time of spawning, it's just a top layer, not a casing layer.

what exactly is the difference between the top layer and casing layer? I know the casing layer helps to keep anything off the surface of the substrate as also keeps it hydrated. But exactly does the top layer do?

A top layer is just a layer of substrate material applied at time of spawning to cover exposed grains.
A casing layer is a non nutritious(or of very little nutrition) that gets applied after full colonization to aid in pinning and moisture retention.
Cubes do not need a casing layer, but in some cases it can be beneficial. It is not needed in monotubs.

Casing is optional for cubes. It doesnt hurt. Just do that 50/50 verm/peat moss.
