Slow growth. Bad news?
    #23195949 - 05/06/16 03:08 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

So i spawned about a week ago to a monotub using damions 50 50 and i just now have 5 white spots the size of a quarter popping up on the surface. Is this normal growth or do uou think its possible there may be a contamination.

Probably a contam. After a week the tub should be fully colonized, or at least close to it. Does the tub has any bad smells? Stalling is usually because of bacteria and most of those end up smelling something fierce in tubs.

It has been getting some light. Ive read light slows it down but it some places it says its good. Does that have anything to do with it?

You should always expose your mycelium to light, even when still in jars. Jars that have been in light are said to fruit faster than jars that weren't.

Just because there is no smells doesn't mean there isn't something funky growing in it. Usually with stalled or very slow growing tubs I just get rid of them before molds take hold of them. You could maybe wait some more if you don't want to get rid of it but I wouldn't expect anything good to happen at that point.

In 5 days you should at least be seeing considerable growth. Can you see any grains that did not recover? Did you shake the jars to see if they recover fast enough to be considered clean before spawning?

A good practice is to shake jars that are 100% colonized so you can see how long it takes for them to recover. If it takes more than 2 days or they don't recover well/at all, then it is safe to say something is wrong. Recovery time will differ from one grain to another, oats regularly recover within 24 hours.
