I get my Exo Terra online. Wish I could find it locally.

I even had to buy my verm online recently, nobody(even the feed stores both chain and mom and pop), are carrying it.

I think we should all start sending them complaints telling them how their bedding mix molded out and killed our tree frogs/hermit crabs or whatever.  This is pretty unacceptable, for the intended use of the substrate, or any other.

"I had just changed out the bedding, and noticed a few small grain-like objects, as well as what looked like some seeds and bits of leaves, but I left for the weekend for a work event, thinking it would be fine since I initially trusted the product, and came back to a giant swath of mold covering the bedding and three of my hermit crabs are presumably dead now.  It's easy to see why it molded over if it's a hydrated mess of grains and seeds and other organic matter.  Where is your quality control?  I've found little bits of these things in many of the expandable substrate bricks and never thought much of it but perhaps I was just lucky that this didn't happen sooner."

Bam, if that don't get a customer service response nothing will.

It could be that mold won't grow on it when used as intended, not heat treated. Trich in particular doesn't grow well on substrates that aren't heat treated.

I would kill to be able to buy another brand locally. I'm really turned off of ecoeearth... I think I am going to try the customer service thing...at least I'll get to bitch at someone lol. I also noticed that the coir had a stringier texture like it wasn't as ground up as the old stuff.

I have found that despite many hydro purpose coir bricks being supplemented with trich, it is easily killed with a heat treatment like pasteurization or sterilization. They also are a more consistent quality and I have never found much in the way of adulterants in them

Bump.

Did any follow up happen on this as far as anyone else finding adulterants in their coir since the last 8 months or so?

I've been using cosmic-coir for a while and have never found anything weird in it.

I switched to exo-terra and haven't found anything weird.  Not going back to eco earth, it was just... too many damn foreign objects at too reliable a rate.

God that would be maddening. But I gotta say that I haven't seen trich since those last tubs I cased with ecoearth. Fuck that garbage. Exo terra or hydro store coir from now on for me.

Zoo med is a shit company anyway, I don't keep as many reptiles as I used to but anything I ever bought of theirs back in the day always sucked balls.

I've had much better results with exo terra in terms of unanticipated contamination.  Of course I still get jars that look a little weird every so often and I expect those to do weird shit, but jars that look clean behave exactly like I would expect now, which threw me off pretty hard for a while.

That shit would not be funny. Nah its bacteria as I proved by the jars I shook. They were fine till I shook em

Both glad and bummed to find this thread as I'm just about to start my first coir sub. Bought some Down to Earth (a company who's products I love)coir bricks the other day, but damn, pricey, $9.99 each. Found eco earth bricks today $9.99 for 3 bricks. FML, ah well, at least I found this in time, Down to Earth it is.

Since someone else resurrected this thread I'll reply to say THANKS for dispelling my delusions about coir being contamination bulletproof!

It is always painful but I'd rather face reality than live in a fantasy until life itself blind sides me, stomp, stomp, stomp!

I wish I'd kept the receipt for that EcoEarth I bought a few days ago :frown:

Let me add a footnote to this. I had my own thread discussing eco earth vs exo terra and all the random shit I have found in eco earth.

Now that I have done a tub with exo terra I can say so far it seems cleaner and more consistency in the bricks. With eco earth I would get some bricks that were very powdery and tried to turn into mud when wet and some bricks were nothing but fiber without any of the pith.

I may be crazy, well I am, but the exo terra seems to have a different smell as well once sterilized (bucketed).

I didn't find any hulls in it so far which was my main bitch about eco earth. I kept finding what looked like oat hulls in it. Where there's hulls there's grain.

The exo terra says "Product of Sri Lanka" on them. ANyone have a pack of eco eath that says where it comes from? Be funny if they came from the same factory and were just sold to diff distributors and the difference is all in our head

Normally it was for me too. That's all I can get locally.

Sucks though because I can't find a decent deal for exo terra. I was getting 48 bricks of eco earth for $70 + free shipping, which would last me a long long long time.

The most recent purchase was exo terra and and I had to pay almost $60 for 24 bricks + free shipping.

We will see if the switch from oats to wbs (smaller grains + lower endospore count likely) will help my contamination problem along with the switch to exo terra.

If anyone has a source for $2 bricks or under feel free to pm me
