sclerotia questions

So i have some mexicana sporse coming and ive been reading up on the proper teks but i just cant find rye berries or winter rye anywhere. I found some perinnel rye grass seed but i wasnt sure if that was the same or not. Can wild bird seed be used for sclerotias? I found wheat berries but they were 3.99 for a lbs i think. Im just not sure as what to use for a suitable substrate since the rye berries are virtually impossible to find at a local store.

I like rye for growing stones as if hods more moisture than many other grains. Wheat berries would be similar but at $4 per lb. IDK.

Hull-on Oats are great and very common in rural areas. Usually sold by the bushel.
Took a few emails and calls to find a mill that was willing to set aside 10kg prior to making 'groats' Most carry rye too. Had zero luck with farm/garden stores, coop etc.
Any type of untreated grass seed is an optimal grain master, then g2g rye/oats. That will buy you 3 weeks until a proper grain source is located

Sclerotia tends to envelop at least a few grains as it grows. I feel better about eating a few rye berries or oats that are stuck in it than WBS, but I don't think it would hurt you.
Snazz mentioned not getting anything with Mexicana. I know that all stone producers are technically Mexicana, but from my own experience and the posts of others on here, spores marketed as Mexicana A strain don't produce stones at nearly the same frequency as galindoi. I've actually never seen a pure stone grow that produces better than galindoi. If anyone has I'd like to see it. For MS grows of galindoi on rye I can consistently pull over 100g per quart. Mexicana A strain I might be lucky to pull 20.

I believe Mexicana and Atlantis #7 are different varieties. Don't quote me on that though had a lot of experience with ATL7, not Mexicana.

Hmm, you may be right. I always though the P. galindoi variety ATL7 was Atlantis #7

I went with the mexicana jalisco strain. I read on a sclerotia tek on here that it isnt too bad compared to the other strains and that it is easier to fruit and the fruits produce the spores easiest compared to others. And eventually i want to try and fruit them once i get the hang of it. And for grain choice im going with rye grass seed. And as far as eating wbs is concerned im pretty sure these health bars my gf puts in my lunch are part wbs hahaha

Psilocybe Atlantis and Psilocybe Galindoi (ATL 7) are indeed different. If you're interested in reading more about that https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/7854539/fpart/1/vc/1
