Liloldme's WBS Tutorial 3

I have had a lot of people asking me lately how I prep my Wild Bird Seed before use, thought it might be helpful if I put together a quick tutorial. This is nothing new or crazy, just basically a spin off of Foo Mans WBS Method that's a little more on the dry side so I can get excessive with the amount of LC I inject for faster colonization times.
Start by checking the capacity of your pressure cooker, mine will hold four 1/2 gallon jars(2 gallons total).
This means that I will be using one gallon total of dry WBS as it will almost Double in size once the moisture is adsorbed.
When you have your WBS measured out pour it into a bucket
Get enough water boiling to cover your WBS completely, I used a little over a gallon
Once you have your water at a rolling boil go ahead and carefully pour it into the bucket with your WBS. At this point you will want to put the lid on your bucket to help retain the heat, keep the lid on for 30-60 minutes minimum but don't sweat it if you need to run to the store and they sit longer
Once you're done soaking your WBS pour them into a large strainer, I'm using a small bucket with holes in the bottom
This I feel is one of the most important steps, Rinsing your WBS. Run very hot water(not boiling)over your seeds for 5 minutes or so in a strainer. You will see the oils coming out of the bottom, the goal is to get all the sticky stuff off your WBS
Now let it sit in the strainer till all the water has drained out, shouldn't take but a couple minutes
Once you have let all the water drain out go ahead and dump your WBS into a shallow container, I use a plastic tray from the feed store.
 Smooth it out flat
Now a fan for air drying
Mix your WBS every 20-30 minutes, check for moisture content. Once you can squeeze a handful and only around 5% stick to your hand it's perfect, otherwise keep drying
Now we're ready to load the jars
Lids with injection port and Filter
Aluminum Foil to keep moisture from pooling into the jars while pressure cooking
Load up your pressure cooker, put the lid on but don't put the rocker weight on yet.
IMPORTANT, vent your steam for 7-8 minutes to get rid of any air pockets inside the pressure cooker. Not doing this will increase your odds for contaminates, make sure and do this when possible.
Now carefully place your weight on the stem, or close the valve if using an autoclave.
Once your pressure valve has blown off for the fist time start a timer for 90 minutes
After your timer goes off let your pressure cooker cool slowly before opening, I like to let mine sit overnight.
Once the jars are cooled they are ready! Here is a couple of my jars after only 5 days at 80 degrees F, they were injected with 20cc of LC from a Costa Rican isolate
Here they are pinning with 1:1:1 Hpoo/Coir/Verm with a cup of gypsum powder
  Harvest time

Good luck and happy growing everyone!

I wouldn't call it better at all, FooMans method is solid. I just wanted to have a write up I could point people to when they ask how I prep my WBS(was asked like 10 times in the last week lol). With his method I couldn't use as much LC without things being to wet and running into problems because of the higher moisture content(perfect for a few CCs though just takes a few more days to colonize). This way just lets me scale things up in a 5 gallon bucket for bigger runs, and uses a fan and the hand moisture testing tek to get the moisture content a little more on the dry side. I usually do 4 gallons(2 pressure cookers at once) per run but used 1 for this tek to keep it simple. I hope this didn't come off wrong was high as shit when I put it together last night aha.

The only thing I would recommend is going for at least 90 mins instead of 60. I actually do 2 hours.

After all this feedback OP has been updated to 90 minutes, new pic as well. I think I'll be increasing my cook times now, I might as well follow the tek lol

If 60 works for you, that's fine. I just wouldn't recommend it to people who are just learning to do grains. It's a good write-up though

After taking your advice it definitely cleared up some miss-information, especially about skipping the rinse. I use healthy amounts of LC, (15ml+ per quart) so and your advice got me back on track. I would also like to point out how you use your lc. 20ml per quart is right in the range to have finished jars within a week. I believe that no matter, LC, LI (blender or blenderless) Slurry, GLC, etc etc. 15-30ml per quart is optimal and usually result with 100% colonization under a week. The grains have to be prepared properly of course. You da man

Campio, that's an excellent point. Many beginners don't realize that grain prep methods can depend on exactly how you plan to inoculate them and some of the teks don't address it.

I've tried this before but it was a failure. LC liquid was just sitting in the bottom of the jar despite the grain being dry. May have to try this again as having your grain jar colonized under 5 days is very appealing.
Does the type of LC (i.e.: karo syrup, GWLC) make a difference in how fast it colonizes?
