Because there are millions upon millions of contaminants per every square foot of air. Our body is also a contaminant haven, there are probably thousands of different bacteria and mold spores hanging out on our body.

Sterilize a grain jar or get a sterile plate of agar and open them for 30 seconds, within a week it will be covered with all kinds of mold satellites and bacterial slime.

Because there's tons of bacteria all over us that doubles in size every 45 minutes when in a nutrient rich medium (like spawn) that not only could stall mycelium, but also open it up for tons of contaminants, including parasitic ones.

Which means the only time you need to be worried about sterility is for agar and spawn. Once you spawn the CLEAN spawn, you can scratch your ass while mixing the materials bare handed, and not have to worry about contamination.

One prime example of a parasitic mold is trichoderma. It lives off of mycelium, and takes it over.

Take a look at this plate below, that is a picture of a sterile agar plate after it was used to take a 5 year old's handprint after a day playing. It is utterly disgusting.

Basically, 1 mold spore has the capability of killing your grow, let alone the thousands of mold spores flying around at any given time. There is an actual average figure of how much organisms are in any given sq foot of air and it is in the millions.

ok thanks! I knew it was due to contaminations but I didn't know it was that a serious matter. I thought, ok some mold whatever..the mushroom would grow anyway. but I guess I was wrong.

Very wrong. I have lost more grows to molds than I am comfortable with and I am definitely not the only one. Learning curve for this hobby is sometimes slow, painful and filled with defeats but a successful grow will make it all worth it.

Fungi are like animals. Long gestation period and can't reproduce until adulthood.

Microbes have a huge advantage from day zero
