What to do with broken cake pieces?
    #23185150 - 05/03/16 04:14 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

How can i salvage a cake if its breaks up into large chunck when trying to remove from the jar. Im positive this thing was fully colonized but i was pretty rough with it. and it now is in large ass chunks and i dont want to loose it ?

How could I toss it in a tray and case it with something to make it work ?

do a bulk tray with it. do like you said, but cover it with coir and verm, not just verm by itself. gypsum wouldn't be a bad idea to mix into the casing either.

I had a piece fall off my bulk sub block a little while ago and I tossed it outside to see if anything happens. it may be worth it to try that too, if you want.

Thanks man im guna try the tray. SO do I put coco coir on the bottom then lay the crumbled mycelium grain pieces on top then cover with more coir then verm ?

Shit this is all so new to me lol. im soaked the pieces like i would a cake right now and ill whip up the tray tonight. I have coir, verm, and gypsum on hand. what kind of tray? Holes in the bottom? soak all the ingredients ?

read up on bulk substrates and casing layers.

you need the water to pasteurize your coir to be at 160f for an hour. it needs to maintain the temp the entire time. if you have a pressure cooker, even better...don't do layers of verm and coir. mix it together, and add some gypsum in.

there's a thread in mush cultivation about the easy bucket tek for pasteurizing your coir...read up on that too.

don't forget to line your tray with plastic so you don't get side pins

Can i just boil the substrate on the stove to pasturize ? seems a whole lot easier than all that bucket tek noise.

as far as ratios for Verm / coir / gypsum go , can i just "eye it out"

Or does it have to be quite specific .?

I don't see any reason boiling wouldn't work. Just be sure you don't run the pot dry while it's boiling. Check it every 15-20 minutes to be sure. Simmering should keep it above 160f, as well, but if you do that I'd keep an eye on the temperature periodically just to be sure. your absolute minimum temperature needs to be 30f to kill any trichoderma. I'm not sure about the rest of the nasties, though, so I'd stay at 160f or higher just to be safe. There's no nutritional microbes or anything else in coir, though, so there's technically no temps too high, I wouldn't think. maybe someone with more knowledge about this than I have can help you. I'm very familiar with coir, just for standard gardening though, not for mushies.

be careful eyeballing your gypsum levels. If you add to much your mixture will become too strong, aka "hot", and could burn your mycelium.

put coir and verm in bucket, pour hot water in bucket. no need to pasteurize.
you can swap "bucket" with "pot" if you like, it doesnt make no difference.
I wouldn't burn cvg on the stove tho..

the only concern I would have with not pasteurizing would be possible trichoderma

...and yes, perhaps I should have specified to mix the coir, verm and gypsum after pasteurizing the coir.

yep, that's what I'm talking about...have a look here:

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/23153074#23153074

most coir is intentionally treated with trich because for standard gardening it's a beneficial bacteria which is symbiotic with mycorrhizae. It needs to be pasteurized.

well, some are, but no it doesnt, and I think you're confusing terms there.. bucket tek is way more than what you need to kill simple trich anyway.

Nope, no confusion here, bud

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/23154084#23154084

it may be overkill, but it's the simplest way.

besides, I've never said "well it's not worth it to take the extra time to be sure"

how can properly pasteurizing a sub be easier than bucket tek'ing it? measuring temps easier than not measuring temps?

bucket tek is pasteurization, technically, if done properly.
