Your Opinion About .5 Micron Spawn Bag Failures
    #23183906 - 05/03/16 11:17 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

Do you think most failures of .5 are really due to contamination through the filter or technical problems such as contaminated syringes, not achieving spawn sterilization, wrong moisture content, contamination from g2g without a flow hood, etc?

Last time I used spawn bags I had a hard enough time getting air into the things without going down to .2 microns! I did have pretty good luck with them though.

I'd even consider going with 5 micron if my environment was a little cleaner! I hate carpeting, knick knacks, fake flowers, and other dust havens but it is not my place...and I can't spray enough bleach to keep mold off the caulking in my shower, that stuff was supposed to be mold-resistant for 5 years--bullshit! It seems to literally be growing inside the caulk :frown:

Why are you in your bathroom?
You need a SAB. That's what the problem is. In fact, everything you listed is more likely the problem than the .5um filter.

Bags are actually best done with a flow hood. They're so big and move air around a lot in a sab. If I had lots of bags, I'd invest in a flowhood. Jars are your best friends with sabs.

Oh, true. :kingtard: I didn't even think of that, as I usually use jars. I've only spawned edibles into the bags. But still, I stand by the rest of the statement. The filter isn't the issue.

I use a syringe and LC when i do bags. 5um are not technically recommended for grain but I have used them successfully. I would suggest keeping the bags in an unmodified tote with the filter pointing down. This will keep the spore load on the filter down.

There should be 0,2um filters that allow more GE than normal if I remember correctly.

I'm not in my bathroom, but not far away. I cannot imagine how the spores could not be everywhere.

I use a SAB. I just kind of think what you said, those other things are more likely culprits than contamination through a .5 filter.

However, I see there are things alive much smaller than previously thought:

Luckily, I'm just gonna do MS inoculation through an injection port so an SAB should be just fine for bags.

I like jars but don't have the storage space or the budget for them (or a flowhood) at the moment.

I was just hoping to get by with .5's because to me it seems that it is common for spawn runs to stall or be slow due to poor or inadequate air availability.

Honestly, I can't remember the filter patch grade of the last bags I used, it has been years, but it was like pulling teeth to get any air in those bags after the PC cooled. They were almost like vacuum bricks of coffee but did work for me though. I think I lost one bag and colonization time was almost identical to my jars.

The smallest mold spore is somewhere around .3 microns I think. It's still not easy for a .3um spore to go through a .5um pore, it needs to fall in just right or be rubbed in or something.
