It is time to colonize Mars

with lichens. The scientific community is being altogether to prudish about this space exploration nonsense it's time to start the space exploitation.

When is time? Define now. Mars wont be colonized for quite some time.

Now.  This year or next. There is whole planet out there waiting to be innoculated. :smirk: Seed the universe.  Collect the harvest. The first colonists can bring reineer along with them and the reindeer will have some thing to eat and so will the colonists.

:stoned: Well heres what i think,I think it's time to start working on it.:stoned: The process would be very long but we are really doing a good job at multiplying on this planet and if we dont find a new place to trash we are going to have to make having children illega pretty soon to give way to goverment generated clones to take over the planet.:stoned: Ofcourse we make Mars a suitable place to live we are only going to have rich people migrating because they will be the only ones to aford it. Then all we have is a small planet colonized by the rich, and a decaying ghetto planet with an intense crime and terrorism rate.:stoned: And there you have your heaven and hell. So now you know your true religion, money.:stoned: As long as you get rich you dont have to worry about going to hell....:stoned: or as we will say it then, staying on this dump.... :stoned:

Not too cold near a geo thermal spring though.

Mars is a dead planet. There is no liquid water on Mars, anywhere. It ranges from a mere -40 C in the daytime at the equater to well below the freezing point of CO2 in some areas.

Again, this is only evidence of past liquid water on Mars. There is evidence all over the surface of the planet of liquid water which was once believed to exist on the surface.

However as far as I know there are no known surface sources of liquid water left on the planet. It is all either very deep underground or frozen in the polar caps.

Now it is possible the features in that picture are caused by recent liquid water...but there is much more to the story than they provide in that short caption. As they say, the water marking appears on the southern facing edges - because these edges would have direct sunlight. I suppose direct sunlight on Mars could be enough to cause some water to melt, but the water would not stay around long. The entire surface is just too pourous.

Also: anything on the surface is exposed to nearly the full extent of solar radiation. Ie: fat chance of anything living.

Ok I've done some more research and it seems that there are a few researchers who over the past few years have been insisting that liquid water can exist on the surface of Mars and even form pools. Apparently it does so by becoming super-saturated with salts when it soaks up from the aquifers below.

But even so: the idea of a growing PF cake is rather silly. Don't forget that mushrooms need very high levels of humidity to grow (being somewhere around 90% water) and such high levels are probably not available anywhere on the planet surface. Also, there is the solar radiation to worry about.

Nah It if it works it going to be hell for the first hundred, maybe thousand maybe more years, there will be plenty of oppertunities for the poor.

I think it is possible, if people cared enough about it.

Right now people dont care, but I think a few of the coming cataclysms will change that.

I think we should throw every thing we have at Mars not just lichen, but every collectable spore we have available. Mostly bacteria and algae. Package them in groups in seed like parcels that would only disperse their spores in the presence of water, and make them with tendency to burrow when moved.

Not only would it provide microbiologists something to think about besides weapons of mass destruction, but it would create all kinds of controversy in the scientific community.

I saw your post about space exploration and agree with what you said. It's the right thing to do, because thats what life does expand to fill the available space. :
