FC Questions: Fan, Mist, Ect.
    #23177697 - 05/01/16 08:12 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

Here it goes :sun:
So I have one setup that is a small terrarium that holds 4 (1 pint) colonized brf cakes and I was wondering how deep I should make the perlite underneath them? I found out that I need to place the cakes on top of something so that they aren't in direct contact with the perlite. Do the jar lids work for this? Even if they have inoculation holes in them? Next is fanning and misting. I have a small electric fan that will totally exchange all the air in the terrarium in about 5 minutes so should I just plan on fanning 3-4 times a day for 5 minutes? I don't think I should leave it on all the time because that would just kill humidity right? Then for misting I heard that I am supposed to mist the cakes directly until they start pinning and when they actually start growing I start mistiming the sides and perlite correct?

So in short
Depth of perlite?
Fanning number of times per day, how long each time?
And misting number of times per day, how wet and where? Does it matter if I directly mist the fruits?

So you have a small terrarium and you also have perlite, that would resemble a Shotgun Fruiting Chamber (SGFC) but to do it right you'd need a sterilite tub of the right size because IMO you'd have to scale down everything in a smaller tub like yours, from the spacing of the holes to the perlite depth.

If you built a SGFC, you wouldn't need a fan at all, the SGFC will provide enough fresh air exchange on its own without the need of external devices.

You can leave the cakes on the jar lids. Most people just cut a piece of tinfoil roughly the same size as the base of the cake and leave the cakes on the foil. You're good either way.

Do not set yourself a schedule to mist your cakes. As a rule of thumb, you have to mist until the cakes glisten with moisture and repeat when you see that the water is mostly evaporated. With a SGFC, fanning is not a compulsory thing, but it can help to kick start the evaporation of the water on the surface of the cakes.

In a SGFC, you gotta drill holes spaced 2" apart from each ohter on all 6 sides of the tote. 3 to 5 inches of perlite would be standard.

I think you have two options now, either research SGFC to have the best results or keep that small tub and risk subpar results.

If you can you should look at my account gallery there is a picture of the terrarium. In the picture the lid is tin foil but I found the real terrarium lid which is just metal mesh that will allow for plenty of air exchange. You should tell me if that terrarium would produce sub par results.

I thought you were talking about a small tote, but nothing to do with that as far as I could tell from the pics.

It looks rad and all, but idk what I am looking at. Maybe you can make a new thread explaining your terrarium if you'd like to get some feedback.
