Eco Earth VS Exo Terra
    #23175377 - 05/01/16 08:44 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

So I have found quite a lot of junk in eco earth but always used it because it is found more readily for some reason. I have found

1. Plastic of all shapes and sizes (bag pieces and hard plastic)
2. screw/bolt
3. Hulls that look almost like oat hulls (which probably support mold germination)
4. Random seeds (ever have your coir sprout?)

I know I have found more but nothing else comes to mind. What have you found and is Exo Terra really any different?

With Eco Earth the bricks vary wildly and sometimes its a brick of super powdery coir that almost turns to mud and sometimes it's more fiber(y).

So is Exo terra any better?

All brands of coir seem to vary in consistency slightly from batch to batch. After seeing what's inside some of the bricks, it is obvious that they are pressed in a dirty factory with giant piles of coir. I wouldn't worry, the coir is still ok quality.

Most of the TC's are recommending Exo Terra, so that's what I've been working with in the past couple of months.
But, there are some good deals on organic coir bricks on Amazon, so I might order a different brand from there to test it out.

Since it is supposed to be used as reptile bedding I don't find this to be ok quality.

If a piece of plastic is missed and a very expensive reptile pet burrows a bit, finds it, eats it, and dies of intestinal blockage I'd be super pissed.

simply put, yes. exo terra has better quality control, and it shows in the end product.

The pet store I buy mice at stopped even stocking eco earth. Reason they gave was that people were complaining that it molds too easy in the hide box and terrarium. Probably from all the damn hulls in it. I used it once and every damn tub came up with a rainbow of molds and also got my first sprout from it.

Have you looked at hydroponic stores. They sell coco coir in bricks or shredded in bags . Not to expensive. Ive personally used the canna coir brand bricks and they have always been consistant. Ive never used for growing mushrooms tho

as has been mentioned in most of these coir quality threads, trich is real easy to kill, even bucket tek gets the job done.

I just got this 26 pound brick of coir and started processing it. looks like the cleaniest coir I've ever bought. apparently, Sri Lanka has good standards for coir bricks :hehehe:
