Liquid Culture Help for a newbie
    #23031247 - 03/21/16 07:36 PM (8 years, 9 months ago)

Hey all!

I read this FAQ (https://www.shroomery.org/62/Liquid-Growth-Medium) it says spore syringe so that's what I used, but then I read on the forums you aren't suppose to use a spore syringe?

I'm trying to figure out is this stuff is mycelium, looks like it to me! I'm guessing the black pieces are spores, is that right? Thanks..

Could be, won't know until you test it... Since spores in general aren't clean, spores to LC is not a good idea... You wanna go spores>agar>Lc, so you can make sure your culture is clean... Contams are hard af to see in an Lc

Yes that appears to be mycelium but maybe not cube myc. Could be mold or any number of things.

Thanks for the replies!! Guess I'm in way over my head... lol

Is there an easy way to test it without a lab? Thanks!

Agar... That's precisely what it is for.

You could try transferring a piece to a test jar and see what happens.

Yea OP, hopefully the syringe was clean. Would be ideal to start from agar however it is not required. Looks alright to me. Knock up some jars and find out. :mushroomgrow:

LocN9ne - I believe you about the agar, it's just new to me so I don't have the stuff for it. I've only done casings before.

So when you guys say jars... you mean agar jars? petri dishes? or rye berry jars?

It seemed to grow nicely, I put it in the fridge and it froze... lol

Still going to try and use it someday... Frozen mycelium? Can that be salvaged?

You're so trusting. I guess I'm just always sceptical of spores. Its not like they can autoclave them to ensure they're clean of contams.

But that's why I advocate spores > agar cleanup > LC > agar testing > MOAR SPAWN

I didn't mean to freeze it I just wanted it in the fridge for a few days... I'm still attempting to thaw it out and use it...
