Drying mushrooms
    #23165577 - 04/28/16 03:15 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

My mushrooms were dried under a fan for 24 hours then put in a bag w/ silica desiccant for 12hrs. When I opened the bag the caps were a little moist and darker brown than before, so I took them out of the bag and put them back under the fan for another 24 hours till cracker dry. They are now in a bag with silica desiccant. Other than the darker brown discoloration on the caps they seem just like all the other dried mushrooms I have (no funny smells, no misshapen caps). Are they safe to eat?

Was the bag tightly sealed? were they in direct contact with the desiccant? Best to put them in a tightly sealed tupperware not in contact with the desiccant. they're probably ok.

they wont get cracker dry under a fan. use heat and moving air to dry them,
and silica for storing. dry silica that is.

you dry the silica (bags) in the oven. if you dont it cannot absorb moisture.
I dont use silica anymore, used to many yrs ago but it really has no use IMO

So do you use another desiccant like drierite, or none at all?

Use the silica properly.. by putting it in the oven first.  Or get a dehydrator and never worry about it again.  A fan cannot, ever, (unless it's really hot and 0% humidity in the environment, so basically never), dry mushrooms to cracker dry.  You do not have cracker dry mushrooms.

Silica has a saturation point where it stops working, the oven reverses that.  If you bought straight silica gel it should mention something about this on the packaging.

none at all. use heat and moving air (dehydrator) to get them dry, store air tight to keep them dry.

I use only a fan and space  heater to dry mine, I slice mine down stem then dry for 36 hrs . It's super dry in my house so I have no issues getting them cracker dry.

seems to be not necessary but it obviously couldn't hurt to have desiccant in the same sealed vessel as you dried fruits for long term storage.

Why the fuck are people still dicking around with desiccants? This has been covered countless times on this forum. Get a dehydrator.
