Moisture on mycelium
    #23172527 - 04/30/16 11:57 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

This Tupperware has been colonizing for 22 days. Noticed what seemed like an excessive amount of moisture the past few days. The other side isn't quite as colonized but it's almost the same. Reason for concern?

It's just condensation from the heat of the mycelium and the shrinking of the substrate will leave a small less than 1mm gap between the plastic and sub it's really nothing to worry about imo.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll post a better picture once I'm back home. I want to just spawn the cake to coir and fruit in trays. Would you guys suggest that or fruit it was one big cake?

Looks like mycelium is growing up through the dry verm on a couple sides.

That's just arial mycelium man :-) its because its such a big ass container and it basically wants to fruit , that's what I have read and experienced lately anyway, I got some 3/4 pint jars that did that same thing

Seems to be stalling a bit. Could I just open it and take the colonized portions out? then spawn to coir.

Forgive me if I'm wrong but have you got gas exchange holes? I had the smart problem till I like poked holes on the foil and covered in micropore tape

Yea 4 GE holes in the lid. I do have them covered with micropore tape though. Since there's mycelilum on the surface I was hesitant to remove it. Didn't wanna risk contamination

So you think I should just let it sit and try to fully colonize? Certain spots look like they've stopped colonizing further.

You can if you want. if it stalled out I would just remove the uncolonized portions and then fruit the rest.

Think I'm gonna spawn it to coir in a tray tomorrow. It's been colonizing 30 days.

just make sure to remove all the uncolonised substrate as sterilized brf in open air is definite contam city. Also since the myc has slowed it may be slow in colonising a bulk sub.

In the future use the right size containers for cakes. I think the 1 cup glass jars are ideal.

I use 1 cup ziploc containers for my brf cakes but they are not ideal if you are starting with a MS syringe.

I think these are the ones you want hopefully someone corrects me here if i'm wrong

I'm just gonna rinse the portions off with water, should I dunk them before spawning to the coir? Yea since these Tupperwares I've moved on to the jars and I'm having more success. The only reason I used this originally was that i purchased a "kit" from a site. The tupperwares have 4 self-healing inoculation points on the top. They're actually a decent design just not for BRF I feel like. Would rye or popcorn tek work with these?

It might be good for something bulk like muda's bottle tek or pasty's straw bottle tek. Just use that container instead of the bottles. These teks have the final substrate sterilized and inoculated and kept sterile until fully colonised and ready to fruit. You would want a colonised LC, LI, a few agar wedges, or grain master to inoculate it with though. You could do a BRF slurry but that has a high risk of contam so you have to be on your game with sterile work...

It may work with grain but it would be hard to break up the grain to redistribute at 30% colonization.

I would just stick to the teks here untill you really know what your doing. Click the link in my sig and checkout spitball jedi's stuff.

Can you link me to the Mudas tek? Can't seem to find it.  I do have a Glovebox to work in, but did you sterility as far as preparing the coir? I'd be placing the tray back in my incubator after it was covered. Also, I was gonna use a fine cheese grater to Mix the spawn with the coir.
