I bought these layered all in one bags (rye grain/straw/hpoo) and one stalled about a week ago. It smells like alcohol when I squeeze it.
Did the rye ferment? Is that even a thing with these?

Judging on ALL the information we have on hand I think we can CLEARLY rule out bacteria in this instance....yeast a fungus! is to blame for the fermenting of said bags....I'm joking by the way no idea...
But I wish my doctor was as good at diagnosing as some of the people on here I wouldn't even need to go see him he would just know without examining testing what was wrong.

Your welcome if you had a still you could heat your bag mix it to point of ethanol evaporation collect any distillate and put a match to it...if it goes up in flames it was yeast making booze in your bags (which are a simple fungal form not bacteria)...if you have a pressure Cooker on the other hand you could cook it again alc would evaporate yeast would die.

Yea if it smells like fermentation I usually just toss it out. Not worth the trouble and usually never recovers. If you are doing tubs and catch it like right away you might be able to save something..But again, usually not worth the trouble and should toss it and start anew. Learning experiences

Hey anodyne Excuse the sarcasm...seems to be a common British thing And maybe I was being a pretentious arse pointing out the lack of info that matey boy based his diagnosis on... Good luck with all your other stuff. <--not sarcasm...

Thank for the replies, everyone. I actually mixed the bag again yesterday since it wasn't colonized yet. I'll get some pics once it starts back up so it can be diagnosed, just for my own education. I bought 2 bags and the other one's just fine...smells like a package of fresh mushrooms from the grocery store. o I can rule out the spore syringe. Should I contact the vendor? It's one of the very very popular site sponsors who sold it to me. They're on the trusted vendor list and actively pay to have a banner here, up top. Any chance they'll make this right if I keep the fact that I used it for an active species on the DL?
