Difference between pasturizing and sanitizing??

So, when I look at straw preparation, I see that the straw needs to be soaked in around 165 degree water for about 2 hours, along with being scrubbed with dish soap. Now, I know that it is important to not "sterilize" the straw, by using the dish soap, the idea behind it is to sort of "disinfect" the straw for any bacteria, and the heated water is meant to "pasteurize" without being so hot that it kills off the nutrients in the straw.
So, this might be a stupid question, but I see that my dish washer has a sanitize setting. If I were to place my straw inside a pillow case, and put it the dish washer (with out soap), wouldn't that kill off the bacteria along with not getting so hot that it kills off the nutrients?
I feel like it would be hard to maintain 165 degrees for 2 hours...I'm not set up for that lol. I would have to do it in my bath tub, and add pots of hot water as time went along. Let me know what you guys think

the soap helps the straw absorb water more quickly by breaking down the waxy coating.
there are some soaps that u can use to chemically pasteurize, need to look in gourmet section for brands, but for cubes, u should use heat IMO.
can u maintain 140f for one hour?? cause thats all ya need bud

I will be growing oysters on straw, my cubes will be in CVG. That's it huh? That makes it a little easier because I can set my water heater to the highest temp and just fill up the bath tub and maybe add a couple pots of boiling water to get it where I need it.

In theory do you think the dish washer sterilize setting would work? Lol.

Maybe but you can just use a cooler to pasteurize straw. When I do straw I cut into no longer than 6 inch length and I wash with dawn. I don't so much worry about rinsing soap off. I put the straw into a cooler and pour boiling water over the straw in the cooler. Use something heavy like a dumbbell to hold the straw down under the water and close the lid. My cooler is a blue igloo with wheels and spiggot so if I need more boiling water I can drain some quick and pour more in but that usually is only for hpoo that I have to add more during pasteurizing.
